[미 대통령 선거] 여성 상습 비하 트럼프, 마침내 여성에 무릎 꿇을 듯

[아시아엔=윤석희 <아시아엔> 미국 특파원] 힐러리 클린턴과 도널드 트럼프의 두번째 토론회가 끝난 후 전황은 뚜렷하다. 지난 2주간 트럼프는 뒤로 밀렸고 이제 시간은 촉박하다. 여전히 불확실성이 무성한 미국의 정치지형이지만 트럼프가 막판 뒤집기를 성공시킬 조직도 전략도 기세도 없어 보인다. 양측이 두고 싸우던 중산층 여성과 20대 유권자 모두 트럼프에게서 이탈하고 있다.

트럼프는 제3당 후보들이 클린턴의 표를 갉아먹어 주기를 기대하지만 이조차도 그에게 유리하지는 않다. 공화당의 골수당원들이 제3당이나 클린턴에게로 넘어가고 있기 때문이다. 트럼프는 유럽이나 미국에서 유권자의 공포를 자극하는 사건이 일어나기를 기대할 수 있겠으나 이 역시 정치 전문가로 이미지를 굳힌 클린턴에게 부정적이지 않다.

대부분의 설문조사가 클린턴이 6% 가량 앞서는 것으로 발표하고 있다. 트럼프는 패배하고 클린턴은 최초의 여성 대통령이자 사상 최악의 여성혐오를 보여준 후보를 상대하여 여성의 참정권을 증명해낸 대통령이 될 것으로 보인다.

트럼프는 여성 유권자들에게 이미 안 좋은 이미지를 주고 있었다. 백인을 제외한 유권자들에게 외면받는 트럼프는 백인 유권자의 65% 이상을 모아야 하기 때문에 중산층 백인 여성표가 절실하다. 1차 토론회에서 힐러리는 트럼프에 대해 “여자들을 돼지, 게으름뱅이, 개라고 부른 남자”라며 “트럼프가 96년 미스유니버스 우승자 알리샤 마차도(Alicia Machado)를 대회 후 살이 찌고 라틴계라는 이유로 ‘미스 피기’, ‘가정부 양’이라고 불렀다”고 1차 토론회에서 비난했다. 트럼프는 며칠 뒤 새벽 “마차도는 더러운 과거와 섹스비디오가 있다”며 클린턴을 욕하는 트윗을 날리며 찌질한 이미지를 더했다.

그리고 10월 8일 <워싱턴 포스트>는 트럼프가 TV쇼 녹화 현장 무대 밖에서 자신이 “(미녀에게는) 당장 키스부터 한다. 유명인 이니까 그냥 하게 해준다”며 연예인 빌리 부시(Billy Bush)와 나누던 개인적인 대화를 공개했다.

공화당 지지기반은 기독교적 가치를 중시한다. 우파 라디오로 유명한 글렌 벡(Glenn Beck)은 “클린턴을 뽑는 것은 정치적 적에게 표를 던지는 것뿐이지만 도널드 트럼프를 뽑는 것은 양심의 가치를 져버리는 것”이라며 강하게 비판했다. 기독교 우파는 낙태 등 사회적 이슈에 반하는 대법관 임명 등을 이유로 들면서 “그래도 공화당”이라며 트럼프를 지지하고 있었다. 그러나 공화당 목사들 역시 기혼여성과 섹스하려고 덤벼드는 후보를 뽑으라고 하기는 어려울 것이다.

미국 최초의 여성 대통령을 위한 도전은 이미 성대결의 구도를 갖추고 있었다. 민주당의 기반은 여성주의와 여성 참정권에 대한 강한 지지를 클린턴에게 보여주었다. 또 클린턴의 지도력에 대한 비판의 상당 부분은 여성의 지도력에 대한 비판이라며 클린턴 후보의 정당성을 주장했다. 클린턴 역시 “아이들에게 여자도 대통령이 될 수 있다는 사실을 보여주어야 한다”며 감성에 호소했다.

힘과 승리를 강조한 트럼프의 유아독존 남성성은 인기를 끌었지만 평생에 걸친 여성 편력으로 그는 발목이 잡혔고 결국 10년 전 언행으로 뒷덜미가 붙들린 셈이다. 수많은 여성들은 트럼프와 같은 남성?권력과 돈을 무기 삼아 여성을 만지고 섹스를 강요하는?에 대한 기억이 있다. 트럼프는 투표소에서 클린턴이 아닌 그 기억과 싸워야 하기에 선거에서 이기기 쉽지 않을 것이다.

Trump Loses to Women

The second debate is over and the situation is clear. Trump was pushed back for the last two weeks and the clock is running out. Volatility is still the name of the game in US politics, but Trump seems to lack the organization, strategy, and momentum to force a last minute comeback. Trump has probably lost much of the crucial suburban White female votes and the millennial votes.

Trump can hope that third party candidates will gnaw away at Clinton’s base but that looks unlikely. Republican Party stalwarts are jumping the fence to the third parties or defecting to Clinton’s side. He could hope for some fear-inducing events in the States or Europe, but even that is not necessarily harmful to Clinton, who is widely accepted as professional. Most polls show Clinton ahead by 6% or more. Trump will probably lose the election, making Clinton not only the first female president, but also the president who had to prove her case against the most openly misogynistic candidate ever.

Female voters already had negative feelings about Trump. Because Trump is doing so badly with non-White voters, he needs to win over 65% of White voters, which is why “suburban White women” have been the key demographic of this election. During the first debate, Clinton called Trump “a man who has called women pigs, slobs, and dogs,” and criticized the way he called the 96 Miss Universe Alicia Machado “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping” for having gained weight and being Latino. Trump retaliated in a tweet a few days later at 3 in the morning, saying Machado has a dirty past and a sex tape, and added to the loser image.

On October 8th, the Washington Post revealed a private conversation that went on behind a TV show recording, where Trump tells entertainer Billy Bush that he kisses women without waiting, and they let him do it.

The Republican base relies upon Christian values. Well-known right wing radio host Glenn Beck said that a vote for Clinton is a vote for a political opponent, but a vote for Trump is a vote against moral values. Social issues such as abortion and fears of a liberal Supreme Court had the Christian right clinging to Trump saying “at least he is Republican.” It will be tough for Republican pastors to encourage their flock to vote for this man who tried to “fuck” a married woman.

The challenge for the first woman president of the US already had the format of a gender conflict. Democrats have shown a strong support for feminism and women in politics by supporting Clinton. They have argued the criticisms against Clinton’s leadership is in many ways a criticism against a woman in power. Clinton herself appealed to the voters saying that children need to see that women can be president. Trump’s alpha masculinity of strength and victory garnered him much success, but his lifetime of womanizing struck back, and a decade old tape has him by the throat. Too many women have memories of a man like Trump?a man who uses his power and money to sexually harass them. Trump will not be fighting Clinton as much as these memories at the voting booths, and will be losing the election.
