엄마 마이아와 캐나다에서 살고있는 십대 소녀 알렉스는 항상 바쁜 엄마로 인해 외롭다. 어느 크리스마스 이브, 알렉스의 집에 베이루트에서 날아온 의문의 소포가 도착한다.

소포에 담긴 물건을 보고 잊고 싶었던 과거를 마주한 마이아는 혼란에 빠지고, 알렉스는 소포에 담긴 엄마가 친구에게 보냈던 편지와 녹음 테이프, 사진들을 통해 달콤하고도 고통스러웠던 엄마의 과거와 마주한다.

레바논 전쟁을 배경으로 한 <메모리 박스>는 한 열정적인 소녀의 찬란한 젊은 시절이 전쟁을 통해 어떻게 파괴되어 갔는지를 감각적인 연출로 보여주는 작품이다.

영화는 첫사랑과 우정이라는 십 대들의 상징적 경험을 매개로 과거와 현재를 오가며, 완전히 다른 시공간을 살았던 두 세대 간의 갈등이 이해를 통해 화해로 향하는 과정을 멜랑콜리한 회고의 감각으로 그려내고 있다.

Maia, a single mother, lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: notebooks, tapes, and photos Maia sent to her best friend from 1980’s Beirut.

Maia refuses to open the box or confront its memories, but Alex secretly begins diving into it. Between fantasy and reality, Alex enters the world of her mother’s tumultuous, passionate adolescence during the Lebanese civil war, unlocking mysteries of a hidden past.
