“내가 살아남는다면, 앞으로도 이란의 상황을 매일 전할 것이다”
[아시아엔=글·사진 알리레자 바라미 이란 ‘Asre Rowshan’ 편집인, 이란 ISNA 전 편집장] 요즘 이란, 그리고 수도 테헤란은 밤이면 소란스럽고, 낮에는 말할 수 없이 고요하다. 지금의 상황을 가장 잘 설명하는 말이다.결국 일이 터졌다. 이스라엘이 이란을 공격한 것이다. 1989년 이란-이라크 전쟁이 끝난 이후, 이 같은 충돌은 항상 가능성으로 존재해왔다. 어떤 시기엔 그 가능성이 거의 없어 보이다가도, 다시 높아지곤 했다.
미국 대선에서 공화당과 민주당이 번갈아 당선될 때마다, 전쟁의 위험도 마치 물결처럼 오르내렸다. 최근 몇 주 동안에는 이란과 미국 사이에 협상이 성사될 가능성이 상당히 커졌지만, 갑작스레 트럼프 대통령의 입장이 바뀌었다.
지난 36년간, 이란 국민은 방공포나 미사일 소리에 잠에서 깨어나는 일이 없었다. 그런데 이틀 전 밤, 이스라엘은 이란 군 고위 지휘관들의 주거지를 정밀 타격했다. 공격은 성공적이었고, 모든 장군이 사망했다. 문제는 그 주변 주택들도 큰 피해를 입었고, 잠자던 아이들, 젊은이들, 어머니들이 다수 목숨을 잃었다는 점이다. 탑에서 거리로 던져진 채 발견된 아이의 시신, 분홍 침대 위에서 콘크리트 더미에 깔려 머리가 으깨진 어린 소녀의 모습은 전국적으로 충격을 안겼다.
그 다음 날 밤, 이란은 탄도미사일로 이스라엘에 반격했다. 이에 따라 이스라엘의 테헤란 및 기타 이란 도시들에 대한 공습도 더욱 거세졌다. 그날 밤 테헤란 시민들은 극도의 불안 속에 밤을 보냈고, 밤새 방공포 소리가 끊이지 않았다.
우리 집은 군부대에서 1킬로미터도 떨어지지 않은 곳에 있다. 어젯밤, 매우 큰 폭발음이 들렸다. SNS에서는 군부대가 공격받았다는 소식이 돌았다. 오늘 이 보고서를 쓰기 위해 나는 직접 그곳까지 걸어가 보았다. 거리에서 본 군부대 외부는 겉보기에는 평온했다.
요즘 테헤란의 일상은 완전히 바뀌었다. 초중고와 대학의 모든 시험이 취소됐고, 영화관, 극장, 콘서트장, 박물관은 전부 문을 닫았다. 모든 문화예술 행사, 학술회의, 경제 포럼이 중단됐다. 스포츠 경기도 취소됐다. 공항은 전면 폐쇄되었지만, 기차와 차량 이동은 아직 가능하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들은 테헤란을 떠나지 않고 있다. 주유소는 열려 있으나 차량 행렬이 길게 늘어서 있고, 식료품점은 정상 운영 중이다.
지난 이틀간 내가 본 테헤란 시민들은 너무도 조용하고, 무엇보다 슬퍼 보였다. 이렇게 침묵에 잠긴 사람들은 처음 본다. 대부분이 가족과 함께 집 안에 머물고 있지만, 오늘 테헤란에서는 대규모 종교 집회가 열렸다. 수천 명의 시민들이 거리로 나와 함께 슬픔을 나누고 연대를 표현했다.
이 글을 쓰는 지금도 방공 시스템은 작동 중이지만, 어젯밤보다는 덜 격렬하다.

Tehran in Flames and Silence

Loud at night and very quiet during the day. This is the best description of the situation in Iran and its capital Tehran these days.
Finally, it happened; an Israeli attack on Iran. Since 1989, when the war between Iraq and Iran ended, this possibility has always existed. Sometimes the probability of its occurrence was much lower and sometimes it increased.
During different periods of victory of Republicans and Democrats in the USA presidential elections, the probability of war followed a sinusoidal curve. In recent weeks, the possibility of an agreement between Iran and the USA had increased greatly, but suddenly President Trump’s position changed.
For 36 years, the people of Iran had not woken up to the sound of air defenses and missiles. 2 nights ago, Israel attacked the homes of some Iranian military commanders. The Israeli attack was successful and all the generals were killed. But the surrounding houses were also damaged and unfortunately a significant number of children, young boys and girls, and mothers were killed in terrorist attacks in their sleep. The image of a child’s body thrown from a tower onto the street and a young girl whose head was crushed under concrete blocks in a pink bed resonated widely in Iran.
The next night, Iran attacked Israel with ballistic missiles. Israel’s attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities increased on the second night. The people of Tehran spent a stressful night. The sound of air defense firing did not stop.
Our house is less than a kilometer from the army barracks. Last night, we heard a loud explosion. They said on social media that the army barracks had been attacked. Today, to write this report, I walked to the barracks. Outside the barracks, from the street, everything looked normal.
Life in Tehran has become special. School and university exams have been canceled. All cinemas, theaters, concerts, and museums have been closed. All cultural, artistic, scientific, and economic seminars have been canceled. Sports competitions have been canceled. All airports are closed, but train and car travel is still possible. But people have not left Tehran. Gas stations are open, with long lines in front of them. Grocery stores are open.
These past two days, I have seen the people of Tehran quiet and, of course, sad. I have never seen people so quiet. Most people are at home with their families, but today a large religious gathering was held in Tehran. Thousands of people showed up at a street carnival to show solidarity.
As I write this, air defenses have been activated again, but less intensely than last night.
We sleep with apprehension at night. If I survive, I will report to you every day on the situation in Iran.
