[아시아엔=글·사진 알리레자 바라미 이란 ‘Asre Rowshan’ 편집인, 이란 ISNA 전 편집장] 전쟁은 4일째에 접어들었다. 전쟁 4일차인 월요일, 테헤란은 눈에 띄게 조용해졌다. 수십만 명의 사람들이 일요일 저녁 자동차를 타고 테헤란을 빠져나갔다. 바로 그 전날 이스라엘 군은 여러 주거지역을 공격했다. 그들은 주거지역 공격은 하지 않겠다고 말했었다. 테헤란 외곽으로 나가는 도로가 크게 혼잡했다.테헤란은 인구밀도가 높은 도시다. 많은 시민들이 떠났지만 수백만 명이 여전히 테헤란에 남아 있다. 하지만 거리에는 사람이 거의 없고, 자동차도 한산하다. 대부분의 사람들이 집 안에 머물고 있다. 테헤란에는 방공호가 없다. 이는 국민들이 정부를 비판하는 단골메뉴 중 하나다. 지난 몇 년 동안 이란 국민들은 정부에 대해 많은 비판을 해왔다.
테헤란에서 열린 거리 시위를 기억하는가? 자유를 요구하는 것과 더불어, 정부 내 부패에 대한 항의가 그 이유였다.
전문가들은 베냐민 네타냐후가 이번 전쟁에서 국민의 불만을 이용하고 있다고 보고 있다. 이스라엘과 동맹을 맺고 있는 이란 전 왕정의 아들은 동영상을 통해 이란 국민들에게 봉기하라고 촉구했다. 해외 거주 일부 이란인들은 이스라엘의 이란 공격을 환영하고 있다. 자신들의 복수를 이스라엘이 대신 해주고 있다는 사실에 기쁨을 감추지 않고 있는 것이다.
하지만 또 다른 많은 해외 이란인들은 이번 전쟁 발발에 대해 몹시 애통해 하며 후회하고 있다. 해외 거주 이란인은 대략 700만명에 이른다.
나는 테헤란 시민들의 의견을 물었다. 대다수 시민들은 네타냐후의 희망이나 예측이 곧 실현되지는 않을 것으로 보고 있다. 이란 국민들은 자존심에 큰 상처를 입었다. 한편으로 이란 정부에 분노하면서도 이스라엘이 자기 집을 침공했다는 사실은 도저히 용서할 수 없다고 느낀다.
이란 국민들은 자신들이 시리아, 이라크, 리비아, 레바논, 팔레스타인, 아프가니스탄 국민들이 느낀 감정을 직접 경험하게 될 줄은 몰랐다. 그래서 그들은 매우 분노하고 있다. 그리고 그 분노는 오히려 서로를 돕게 만들었다.
테헤란을 떠난 친구들, 또는 다른 도시에 사는 친구들이 계속 나에게 전화를 한다. 가족과 함께 테헤란을 떠나 자신들과 합류하라고 권유한다.
하지만 나는 언론인이다. 의사처럼 나에게도 책임이 있다. 나는 과거 지진, 홍수, 화재, 비행기 추락, 폭동, 혁명 등 이란과 다른 나라에서 일어난 사건들을 취재한 적이 있다. 비록 전쟁터에 특파원으로 파견 나가 취재한 경험은 없었고, 또 내가 그런 경험을 바랬는지, 기억도 확신도 없다.
그러나 내 고향 도시에서 전쟁을 취재하게 될 줄은 몰랐다.
이스라엘이 이란 언론사를 공격할 것이라는 위협이 있은 후, 우리 뉴스룸도 재배치해야 했다. 뉴스룸 대신 오늘은 집에서 일했다. 전화 취재와 방송 모니터를 병행했다. 현재 테헤란에서는 사이버 공격을 막기 위해 인터넷 속도가 느려졌지만, 완전히 차단되지는 않았다. 많은 동료들이 재택하면서 기사를 출고했다.
그러던 전쟁 4일차 저녁, 이스라엘은 이란 국영방송을 공격했다. 당시 생방송 뉴스 프로그램이 진행 중이었고, 스튜디오 천장이 갑자기 무너졌지만 앵커는 다행히 죽지는 않았다. 여성 앵커였으며, 마지막 순간, 마지막 폭발까지 자신의 임무를 다했다. 이스라엘은 군사 관련 보도를 이유로 TV 방송국 공격을 정당화했다.
이란 방송국 공격으로 얼마나 많은 사람이 사망하고 다쳤는가는 아직 알 수 없다. 뉴스 방송은 중단되었지만, 잠시 후 같은 여성 앵커가 다시 스튜디오로 돌아와 방송을 재개했다. 물론 많은 이란인들은 국영방송에 비판적이며, 외국 방송을 시청한다. 이들 외국 방송들은 미 국무부나 사우디 정부의 자금으로 운영되며, 따라서 이스라엘 편향적인 성향을 보인다. 이란 국영방송의 잘못된 운영 결과로, 국민들은 오히려 정부의 적들의 말에 귀를 기울이고 있다.
지금 이 기사를 쓰고 있는 밤, 도시는 조용하다. 방공 소리는 덜 들리지만, 때때로 강해지기도 한다. 특히 어젯밤 공격은 대부분 새벽 2~4시에 집중되었다.
어제 저녁 거리를 걸었다. 도시는 확실히 조용했지만, 한 남자가 자기 집과 이웃 집 앞 정원에 물을 주고 있었고, 다른 이웃은 에어컨을 수리하고 있었다. 한 소년은 거리에서 스쿠터를 타고 있었다. 이런 모습을 보며, 테헤란에도 다시 삶이 돌아올 수 있다는 희망을 품게 되었다.

Attack on Iranian TV-Report on the fourth day of the war

The war has entered its fourth day. Tehran became noticeably quieter on the fourth day of the war (Monday). Hundreds of thousands of people left Tehran by car on Sunday evening. Yesterday, the Israeli army attacked several residential areas. They had said they would not do this. These attacks caused heavy traffic at the exits of Tehran.
Tehran is a large, densely populated city. So despite the departure of many citizens, millions of people are still in Tehran. The streets are deserted and there is little traffic. So most people are in their homes. Tehran has no shelter, and this is one of the people’s criticisms of the government. The people of Iran have been very critical of the government in the past few years. Do you remember the street protests in Iran? One of the reasons was the demand for freedom, another reason was to protest against administrative corruption in the government structure.
Analysts believe that Benjamin Netanyahu has also relied on the people’s dissatisfaction in this war. The son of the former Shah of Iran, who is an ally of Israel, encouraged the Iranian people to revolt in videos. Some Iranians abroad are happy about Israel’s attack on Iran, because they enjoy revenge. Many Iranians abroad are also sad and regretful about the start of this war. There are 7 million Iranians abroad. But what I saw in talking to the people of Tehran was that Netanyahu’s wish and prediction will not come true soon. People in Iran have hurt their pride. They are angry with the government, but they cannot forgive that Israel has invaded their homes. The Iranian people did not expect to experience the feelings of the people of Syria, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Palestine and Afghanistan. That is why they are very angry. And this anger has made them help each other more. Many of my friends who have left Tehran, or who live in other cities, keep calling me. They want to convince me to leave Tehran with my family and join them. But I am a journalist. I have responsibilities like doctors. I had previously covered earthquakes, floods, fires, plane crashes, riots, revolutions, and other events in Iran and other countries. I always thought that I had never experienced war journalism. I didn’t know if I would wish for it or not? But I didn’t think that one day I would be covering war in my own city.
After threats that Israel was planning to attack Iranian media, our news agency was reshuffled. I was home today. The internet has been slowed down to prevent cyberattacks, but it hasn’t been cut off. Many of my colleagues wrote their reports at home. But on the evening of the fourth day of the war, Israel attacked Iranian television. It was a live news program when the studio ceiling suddenly collapsed, but the news anchor was not killed. She was a woman. She was doing her job until the last moment and the last explosion. Israel justified the attack on the television by saying that it was because they were broadcasting military news!
How many people were killed and injured in the attack on Iranian television? The news program was interrupted, but after a while the program resumed and the same female presenter returned to the studio. Of course, many Iranians are critical of Iranian television and watch foreign television channels. Those channels operate with money from the US State Department or the Saudi government. That is why they are more pro-Israel. The result of the mismanagement of Iranian television is that people pay attention to the words of the government’s enemies.
As I type this article, the city is quiet at night. The sound of air defense is less audible, although sometimes it becomes intense. Of course, many of the attacks last night were carried out at 2-3-4 o’clock.
Yesterday evening I walked the streets. The city was noticeably quiet, but I saw a man watering the garden in front of his house and the garden in front of his neighbor’s house. One of the neighbors was also repairing his air conditioner. And a teenage boy was on the street with a scooter. This gave me hope that life would return to the city of Tehran.
