Today, I am one year older. Does this mean anything? To me, and in most ways, not much. But when years collapse one onto the other, there is time for reflection.

It has been a full year, with a lot to learn and discover and with tons of happy and not so happy memories. The World Journalists Conference 2022 was a renewed opportunity to meet with friends and to share views even though it was through a computer or laptop screen.

There were great ideas at the conference even though some speeches did not bring in new elements as expected. The AJA contributions were again the most interesting and the most daring. The conference was a positive event in my 61st year.

My heart was put through the wringer in January when we lost my mother who passed peacefully in the family home. It was hard. Very hard. And for everyone, young and old. She was an inspirational woman with outstanding aptitudes for character and capacity building across generations. She will always hold a highly significant place in our hearts and minds.

We are grateful to all the relatives, neighbors and friends who stood with us, providing much-needed support. Four months after the time I lost my mother, my heart was again put in a wringer when we lost our dear friend Nasir Yusoff, Former Managing Editor of Bernama, the Malaysian news agency. He left us only two years after he retired. His last days were spent with his extended in family, something that he cherished dearly.

Nasir was a great friend with a vast experience and great wisdom. He was always willing to share both. He believed strongly in the Asia Journalists Association and was keen on expanding its outreach and enhancing its activities.

On the positive side, my quest for cultural explorations guided me to Kyrgyzstan for an eight-day trip where my dear friend Nurzhan Kasmalieva and her family were gracious hosts, graceful guides and generous companions. I was able to feel the culture and the history of Kyrgyzstan during the trip.

There was so much to learn, so much to admire in this Central Asia country rich with culture and diversity where nature and people, and traditions and modernism co-exist harmoniously.

There is of course a lot to talk about regarding the last 12 months as life goes on and on …Going into my new year, I look forward to greater interaction with the world, to consolidating my bonds and special camaraderie with friends, to learning much more about other countries, cultures and civilizations and to reinforcing my commitment to giving back in every, and any, way I can, learning from the past.

My gratitude and thanks to all those who were there to teach, assist and support me in various ways and those whose friendship I will always value for their life’s gifts, and wishing them the brightest times and the most rewarding days.
