[도쿄올림픽③ 필리핀] 여자역도 히딜린 디아즈, 필리핀 사상 첫 금메달
도쿄올림픽이 막을 내린지 10월 8일로 두달이 지났습니다. 코로나19로 1년 연기 끝에 7월 23일 개막한 도쿄올림픽엔 전세계 205개국이 참가해 8월 8일까지 열렸습니다. 아시아에선 아프간을 비롯해 내전 중인 시리아 등 모두 40여개 국가가 참가했습니다. 또 이번 대회에선 1896년 제1회 대회 당시 제정됐던 ‘더 빨리, 더 높이, 더 힘차게’ 모토에 ‘다 함께’(together)를 추가하였습니다. 코로나19 이후 최초의 대규모 국제행사인 도쿄올림픽은 다가올 국제행사에 좋은 선례를 제시한 것으로 평가됩니다. <아시아엔>은 국내에는 잘 알려지지 않은 아시아 국가들의 도쿄올림픽 이야기를 전합니다. <편집자>
[아시아엔=알린 페레 가가네라 필리핀 라디오 앵커] 필리핀 선수단이 ‘2020 도쿄올림픽’에서 사상 첫 금메달을 따내면서, 현지는 축제의 장으로 변했다. 여자 역도에서 금메달을 딴 히딜린 디아즈(Hidilyn Diaz) 선수가 시상대에 오르자 올림픽 사상 최초로 필리핀 국가가 울려 퍼졌고, 필자를 포함한 많은 이들의 눈동자에 눈물이 맺혔다.
디아즈는 꿈을 이루기 위해 수많은 좌절과 어려움을 겪어야만 했다. 잠보앙가 출신인 그녀는 가족의 생계를 보태기 위해 야채를 팔아야 했을 정도로 빈곤한 가정에서 자라왔다. 운동선수가 되겠다고 굳게 다짐을 했던 순간에도 그녀는 노후화된 장비에 의지해 운동에 매진할 수밖에 없었다.
코로나19로 인해 필리핀에 봉쇄조치가 내려졌음에도 운동을 포기할 수 없었던 그녀는 말레이시아에서 수 개월동안 체류하면서 비공식 훈련을 이어 나갔다. 때문에 전직 정부관료로부터 반정부 인사라는 비난을 받기도 했다. 하지만 디아즈는 이 모든 어려움을 딛고 이겨냈을 뿐만 아니라, 목표를 달성하기 위해선 자신을 믿고 끝까지 견디며 항상 최선을 다해야 한다는 교훈을 전했다.
이 모든 과정을 잘 알고 있는 필리핀 국민들은 필리핀의 모든 사람들과 함께 나는 디아즈가 전하는 감동을 온몸으로 느낄 수 있었다. 그녀가 따낸 메달과 상금이 정말 값지다고 생각하지만, 그 이상으로 값진 것은 다음 세대들에게 잊혀지지 않을 역사적인 순간을 선사해줬다는 것이다.
아울러 코로나19로 위태로운 상황 속에서도 올림픽을 개최하기 위해 필사적으로 노력한 일본에게 고마움을 표한다. 이번 올림픽의 성공적인 개최는 일본의 회복력과 질서정연함을 입증해주는 결과물이었다.
Inspiration in gold
The whole country was ecstatic, as we finally won our first-ever Gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. And I am doubly proud that a woman brought this glory to all Filipinos!
Hidilyn Diaz snatched the gold in women’s weightlifting and brought tears to my eyes as I listened to the Philippine National Anthem being played for the first time in these modern Olympics.
Hidilyn had to overcome a lot of challenges in reaching her dreams. From a poor family in Zamboanga City, she had to sell vegetables to support their family’s income.
When she took the sport seriously, she had to be content with old equipment and limited financial support.
During the COVID lockdown, she had to stay in Malaysia for several months and do “informal” training. She was even accused by a former government official of being anti-government.
But Hidilyn gave me a crucial lesson. That it’s important to persevere and must give your best all the time to achieve your goals. That one must do everything in your own power, but always have faith in God.
Together with the whole country, I am grateful to Hidilyn for inspiring us. The money and prizes she will get are well-deserved. But nothing will be more important than the historical moment she has given to the future generation of Filipinos.
We appreciate the extra-ordinary effort of Japan in hosting the Tokyo Olympics, despite the very serious threat of COVID. The success of this game is a testament to the resilience and discipline of the Japanese people.(by Alin Ferrer-Garganera Media practitioner, radio anchor/ broad caster)
