암스테르담에 있는 안네 프랑크 박물관. 폭풍우가 몰아치던 날, 안네의 일기를 보관하던 유리관이 깨지고, 신비한 일이 일어난다. 일기장에만 존재하는 안네의 상상 속 친구 키티가 현대의 유럽에서 되살아난 것이다. 일기와 함께 있어야만 존재할 수 있다는 사실을 알게 된 키티는 불법체류난민 보호소를 운영하는 피터와 함께 일기를 가지고 안네의 흔적을 찾아 나선다.
아리 폴만이 2013년작 <더 콩그레스> 이후 무려 9년 만에 선보이는 애니메이션 <안네 프랑크를 찾아서>는 안네 프랑크의 일기가 보여주는 휴머니즘의 가치를 현대 유럽을 떠도는 난민들의 상황과 연결시킨다. 물신화된 안네 프랑크가 아닌, 비극 속에서도 끊임없이 삶을 사랑했던 소녀 안네의 이야기는 75년이 지난 지금도 유효하다. 과거와 현재, 현실과 판타지를 아름다운 그림체와 유려한 이야기 구조로 풀어낸 마법 같은 작품.
Kitty, the imaginary friend to whom Anne Frank wrote in her Diary, comes to life in present-day Amsterdam. Unaware that 75 years have gone by, Kitty is convinced that Anne must be alive. Where Is Anne Frank? tells the story of Kitty’s quest across contemporary Europe to find her beloved friend. Armed with the precious Diary and with help from her friend Peter, who runs a secret shelter for undocumented refugees, Kitty follows Anne’s traces, from the Annex to her tragic end in the Holocaust.
