[파키스탄기자 라훌의 포토에세이] 신촌의 ‘불금’에서 ‘신촌스러움’을 발견하다
[아시아엔=라훌 아이자즈 기자] 생기와 활기가 가득 찬 신촌의 밤을 한 단어로 표현할 수 있을까? 신촌만이 갖고 있는 그 독특한 분위기는 어떠한 표현으로도 쉽게 설명할 수 없다. 그래서 나는 ‘신촌스러움’이 가장 신촌에 어울리는 단어라고 본다.
금요일과 토요일 밤이면 거리에 모인 젊은이들로 신촌의 열기가 달아오른다. 한국식 호프집, 삼겹살집, 카페, 미국식 펍까지 신촌에는 없는 것이 없다. 신촌이 잠들지 않는 이유다.
주말 한밤 중의 신촌. 술한잔 걸친 사람들은 친구들과 콧노래를 부르고, 호프집에선 술을 나누며 주말을 보내는 사람들로 붐빈다. 신촌에서 가장 인기있는 미국식 펍 ‘마이크스 케빈’엔 외국인들과 한국인들로 붐볐다. 마치 헌터 톰슨 감독의 영화에 담긴 60년대 비트문화와 켄터키 더비 감성이 재현된 느낌이다. 사람들은 음악에 몸을 흔들며 맥주를 마시며 한 주의 스트레스를 날린다. 신촌의 모든 에너지, 열정들이 느껴진다.
Sinchon nightlife: Of euphoria and transcendence
Sinchon. How to talk about Sinchon? If I start to describe it, it will be a 50-page list of adjectives. Lively, bustling, vibrant, transcending, and so on and so forth. But, only one word can perfectly describe Sinchon: Sinchon-esque. Perhaps it is the uniqueness of this area that no other word can do justice to. The neighborhood is just full of exuberance, dynamism and euphoria.
Populated by those whose liver is going to curse and yell at them in ten years: “Give me a f***ing break!” including myself, this locale breathes to the rhythm of loud music that oozes from the closed bar doors on weekends.
Yes, Sinchon is not a neighborhood. It is a living entity. And on Friday and Saturday nights, it is at its wildest. Youngsters crowding every street, cigarettes gripped between two fingers, drinks held loosely with the other two fingers and a thumb, and the other hand either high fiving a friend or embracing their girlfriends.
From Mike’s Cabin, the most popular pub in Sinchon among foreigners and Koreans alike, to Bar Fly, a nightclub bar, to traditional Korean BBQ restaurants to cafes to you name it, Sinchon offers something for everybody. Perhaps, that is the reason Sinchon never sleeps. You can be anyone or do anything here. It is like the 60s beat culture or something like the Kentucky Derby scene, which Hunter S. Thompson so masterfully wrote about.
From midnight onwards, puddles of spit, vomit and groups of people can be found lurking the streets ? from guys taking a smoke break during the Korean BBQ dinner to some losing it from a bit too much alcohol and passing out on the sidewalks. Others dance their heads off as a new cocktail of beer and saliva drool from their mouths·Bloodshot eyes, sweat running down the spine, hair dancing in the air like the audio waves in Adobe Audition, everything in Sinchon exuberates energy, passion and ecstasy.
