[2020 평창영화제⑥] 노량진 고시촌의 ‘마스코트’
“다시 평화!” 2020년 6월 중순, 강원도 평창에선 2020평창국제평화영화제가 열렸습니다. 코로나19로 극도의 긴장과 우려 속에 엿새간 치러졌습니다. 전 세계 주요 영화제가 취소 또는 연기되는 가운데 코로나 사태 이후 처음으로 열린 평창영화제는 안팎으로 ‘성공적’이었다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. <아시아엔>은 이번에 선을 보인 34개국 96편의 영화 가운데 선별해 독자들께 소개합니다. <편집자>
청년 세대의 암울한 현실은 단편영화가 자주 다루는 테마다. 여기서 <마스코트>는 도시의 마스코트가 되고 싶은 여우의 목소리를 통해 현실을 반영한다. 노량진 고시촌에서 고되게 살아가는 여우. 그는 합격을 위해 밤낮없이 공부하고, 생계를 위해 온갖 아르바이트를 한다.
개와 유사한 외모를 위해 높은 이자로 돈을 빌려 성형수술까지 하는 여우. 하지만 ‘흙수저’에게 현실의 벽은 높다. 이미 우리에게 익숙한 사회적 현상을 우화적 상상력과 독특한 톤에 담아낸 작품. 여전한 현실을 문뜩 돌아보게 만드는, 재치와 울림을 겸비한 애니메이션이다.
Mascot
The stark reality facing the young generation is a common theme of short films. Mascot depicts such reality with the story of a fox dreaming of becoming the mascot of the city. The fox lives a hard life in Noryangjin, a town in Seoul also known as the “exam village.”
It studies day and night to pass the mascot exam and works all kinds of part-time jobs to make a living. It even takes out a loan and gets plastic surgery. But life is not easy for a have-not, however hard it tries.
This film recreates the society we live in with fable-inspired imagination and a unique tone. This witty animated film resonates deeply with the audience.
