[2020 평창영화제] 전쟁고아들의 이야기 ‘김일성의 아이들’
“다시 평화!” 2020년 6월 중순, 강원도 평창에선 2020평창국제평화영화제가 열렸습니다. 코로나19로 극도의 긴장과 우려 속에 엿새간 치러졌습니다. 전 세계 주요 영화제가 취소 또는 연기되는 가운데 코로나 사태 이후 처음으로 열린 평창영화제는 안팎으로 ‘성공적’이었다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. <아시아엔>은 이번에 선을 보인 34개국 96편의 영화 가운데 선별해 독자들께 소개합니다. <편집자>
1950년 한국전쟁 이후 10만 명 이상의 전쟁고아가 남북 각지에 생겨났다. 이때 5천 명 이상의 북한 고아들이 위탁 교육이라는 명분 아래 폴란드, 체코, 헝가리, 루마니아, 불가리아 등 동유럽 여러 나라로 보내졌다. 북한에서 동맹국에게 위탁교육을 맡겨 동유럽 전역으로 흩어진 북한 아이들과, 그들과 함께 우정을 나눈 현지 아이들이 이제는 노인이 되어 돌아보는 따뜻한 우정의 이야기. 북한 교사와 사랑에 빠져 결혼했으나 생이별을 하게 된 현지 교사의 가슴 아픈 사랑이야기가 국경과 이념을 초월한 인간의 마음에 대해 숙고하게 만든다.

The 1950 Korean War resulted in over 100,000 orphans on both sides of the 38th parallel. North Korea sent more than 5,000 war orphans to different countries in Eastern Europe under the excuse of putting them in custody for education. Scattered throughout Eastern Europe to be taken care of by North Korea’s allies, these children forge ties of friendship with local children. And now, grown old, they look back on those days of friendship. A love story of a teacher who fell in love with another teacher from North Korea but had to be parted from each other is a poignant reminder of how thoughts and feelings transcend borders and ideologies.
