Nepal Mourns Six Climbers Among 10 Killed in Broad Peak Avalanche
By Bishnu Prasad Gautam
KATHMANDU — Nepal is mourning the deaths of six of its mountaineers, including internationally renowned climber Nirmal Purja, widely known as Nimsdai, and veteran guide Pur Bahadur Gurung, who were killed alongside four foreign climbers in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.
According to Pakistani authorities, expedition officials and international news reports, the 10-member international group was struck by an avalanche on Thursday, July 30, while climbing between Camp II and Camp III at an altitude of about 6,600 metres.
Broad Peak, located in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, rises to 8,051 metres and is the world’s 12th-highest mountain. Some international sources list its elevation as 8,047 metres.
Nepal’s government said the victims included six Nepali climbers and four foreign nationals. The Nepali victims included Purja, Gurung and Nima Sherpa. The identities of the remaining Nepali climbers were also circulated by local media and mountaineering organisations.
The four foreign climbers were from Oman, the United States, Pakistan and China. They included Omani mountaineer Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, American climber Mallory Geis and Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi.
Al Harthy was one of Oman’s best-known mountaineers and the first Omani woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Her death has brought sorrow not only to Oman but also to the wider Arab mountaineering community.
Geis, who was from San Antonio, Texas, was making her first attempt on an 8,000-metre peak in Pakistan.
Sakhi was an experienced high-altitude guide, geographer and photographer who was familiar with the difficult terrain and unpredictable weather of the Karakoram range. The Broad Peak expedition was expected to be his final major climb.
The climbers lost contact with their expedition operators after the avalanche. Pakistani authorities deployed ground teams, drones and military helicopters, but strong winds, heavy cloud and poor visibility severely hampered the search and recovery operation.
Drone footage initially located several bodies. By Saturday, rescuers had found four bodies and recovered three of them, while efforts continued to retrieve the remains of the other victims.
Elite Exped, the company led by Purja, later confirmed that all 10 members of the group had died.
Purja was one of Nepal’s most internationally recognised mountaineers. He gained worldwide attention in 2019 after climbing all 14 of the world’s peaks above 8,000 metres in six months and six days, or 189 days, through his Project Possible campaign.
Purja served in the British military for 16 years, including 10 years with the Special Boat Service, before becoming a professional mountaineer. He was also widely respected for taking part in rescues in some of the world’s most dangerous high-altitude regions.
After beginning his climbing career with an ascent of Lobuche East in 2012, Purja went on to support mountain communities through the Nimsdai Foundation. Among its projects was the construction of accommodation for porters in the Everest region.
In January 2021, Purja joined nine other Nepali climbers in completing the first winter ascent of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. The team’s achievement became a symbol of unity and pride in Nepal’s mountaineering community.
Gurung was also a highly experienced Nepali mountaineer and guide who had taken part in numerous expeditions on Everest and other major peaks.
The deaths have caused deep sorrow across Nepal, a country with a proud mountaineering tradition and a large community of climbers, Sherpas, guides, porters and expedition workers. Local newspapers and online media have widely covered the tragedy and recalled the achievements of Purja, Gurung and the other victims.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah, political leaders, tourism experts and mountaineering organisations expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Shah said that although the climbers’ physical journeys had ended, the history of their courage, dedication and contributions would remain alive and continue to inspire future generations.
Condolences were also expressed in Oman, the United States, Pakistan and China, reflecting the international scale of the tragedy.
The avalanche has once again highlighted the extreme dangers faced by high-altitude mountaineers, even those with extensive experience and advanced equipment.
Weather conditions in the Karakoram range can change without warning, while avalanches, falling ice and rock, crevasses, strong winds and extreme cold remain constant threats.
Nepal’s mountaineering community has called for the contributions of all six Nepali climbers to be properly recognised. It has also emphasised that Sherpas, guides, porters and expedition workers often face the greatest risks while helping others pursue their ambitions on the world’s highest mountains.
The 10 mountaineers came from five countries and different backgrounds, but they shared the same passion for the world’s highest peaks. Their courage, determination and contributions to international mountaineering will be remembered for years to come.
