[성명] 아시아기자협회 “언론중재법 개정 시대착오···언론자유 끝내 지켜질 것”

아시아기자협회(아자, 회장 아시라프 달리)는 23일 여당의 언론중재법 개정안과 관련해 “이는 언론자유에 대한 심각한 침해”라며 이에 맞서 언론자유를 지키기 위해 실천적 연대에 나설 것“이라고 말했다.

아시아기자협회는 “자유민주주의 국가인 대한민국에서 언론자유는 국가의 법률과 시민의 뜻으로 함께 이뤄낸 가장 값진 업적”이라며 “언론자유를 박탈하려는 모든 시도는 한 국가의 민주주의를 짓밟는 행위에 다름 아니다”라고 했다.

아시아기자협회는 특히 “아시아 각국은 산업화와 민주화를 동시에 이룬 한국에 경의를 표해 왔다”며 “언론의 다양성과 뉴미디어의 눈부신 발전을 이룬 한국은 아시아 각국의 롤모델이었다”고 밝혔다. 아시아기자협회는 그러나 “최근 한국에서 집권 여당을 중심으로 언론중재법 처리를 강행하려는 시도가 벌어지고 있는 것은 시대착오적이며 비상식적인 처사”라며 “언론탄압의 우려가 한국에서 벌어지고 있는 데 대해 아시아기자협회는 깊은 유감과 우려를 표하지 않을 수 없다”고 말했다.

아시아기자협회는 “역량과 인격을 존중받던 언론인들이 2020년 총선을 통해 국회의원에 당선된 후 이번 법처리과정에 앞장서고 있는 것에 대해 안타까움을 금할 수 없다”며 “우리는 이들 언론계 출신 국회의원들이 언론인 시절 초심을 되찾아 언론 재갈물리기에서 발을 빼고, 언론자유와 저널리즘 발전에 기여해 주길 바라 마지않는다”고 덧붙였다.

아시아기자협회는 “우리 아시아기자협회는 언론자유를 제한하는 어떠한 압력과 간섭에 맞서 국제기자연맹(IFJ) 등과 연대해 나갈 것임을 아울러 밝혀둔다”고 말했다.

아시아기자협회는 성명에서 “민주주의는 종국에는 반드시 승리할 것이고, 언론자유 또한 어떤 박해와 압력에서도 끝내 지켜질 것이라는 사실을 믿으며, 이의 수호를 위해 촌각도 아끼지 않을 것임을 굳게 다짐한다”고 끝맺었다.

-언론중재법 개정안 관련 아시아기자협회 성명-

아시아기자협회는 한국에서 논의 중인 언론중재법 개정안이 언론자유에 대한 심각한 침해라고 규정하며, 이에 맞서 언론자유를 지키기 위해 실천적 연대에 나설 것이다.

자유민주주의 국가인 대한민국에서 언론자유는 국가의 법률과 시민의 뜻으로 함께 이뤄낸 가장 값진 업적이다. 언론은 대중에게 진실을 전달하고 대화의 창으로 기능하며 제 역할을 다할 수 있다. 따라서 언론자유를 박탈하려는 모든 시도는 한 국가의 민주주의를 짓밟는 행위에 다름 아니다.

아시아기자협회는 1945년 독립 이후 산업화와 민주화를 동시에 이룬 한국에 경의를 표해 왔다. 또한 언론의 다양성과 뉴미디어의 눈부신 발전을 이룬 한국은 아시아 각국의 롤모델이었다. 아시아 언론은 한국이 21세기 들어 국제기자연맹(IFJ)의 서울 총회(2001)와 서울 및 금강산 특별총회(2007), 2017년 이후 매년 세계기자대회를 주최하면서 자유언론과 저널리즘 발전의 허브 역할을 해온 점에 주목해 왔다.

그러나 최근 한국에서 집권 여당을 중심으로 언론중재법 처리를 강행하려는 시도가 벌어지고 있다. 이는 시대착오적이며 비상식적인 처사다. 언론탄압의 우려가 한국에서 벌어지고 있는 데 대해 아시아기자협회는 깊은 유감과 우려를 표하지 않을 수 없다.

특히 아시아기자협회는 역량과 인격을 존중받던 언론인들이 2020년 총선을 통해 국회의원에 당선된 후 이번 법처리과정에 앞장서고 있는 것에 대해 안타까움을 금할 수 없다. 우리는 이들 언론계 출신 국회의원들이 언론인 시절 초심을 되찾아 언론 재갈물리기에서 발을 빼고, 언론자유와 저널리즘 발전에 기여해 주길 바라 마지않는다.

Statement by Asia Journalist Association on Press Arbitration Act.

South Korea, 23 August 2021 – Asia Journalist Association (AJA) defines the revision of the Press Arbitration Act, which is being discussed in Korea, as a serious violation of freedom of speech, and will launch a practical solidarity to protect freedom of speech.

In our democratic country; the Republic of Korea, press freedom is the most valuable achievement supported by the law of state and the will of the people. The media can deliver the truth to the public and function as a window for communication. Therefore, every attempt to deprive a nation of freedom of speech is nothing more than an act of trampling on democracy.

The Asia Journalist Association has paid tribute to Korea, which has achieved both industrialization and democratization since its independence in 1945. Also, with its diversity in the media and remarkable development of new media, Korea has been a role model for Asian countries.

Asian media have noted that Korea has served as a hub for the development of free press and journalism by hosting World Journalists Conference (WJC) every year since the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Seoul General Assembly (2001) and the Special General Assembly of Seoul and Mount Kumgang (2007) in the 21st century.

However, attempts have recently been made in South Korea to push ahead with the Press Arbitration Act centered on the ruling party. This is anachronistic and ill-conceived. AJA cannot help expressing deep regret and concern over such situations in Korea.

In particular, AJA cannot help but feel sorry that journalists, who were respected for their competence and character, are leading the legal process after being elected to the National Assembly through the 2020 general election. We hope these journalists-turned-lawmakers to regain their initial motivation as journalists, withdraw from the gag on the press, and contribute to the development of freedom of speech and journalism.

The Asia Journalist Association states we will join forces with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and others against any pressure and interference that restricts freedom of speech.

The Asia Journalist Association firmly believes that democracy will eventually prevail, freedom of speech will be protected under any persecution and pressure, and we will spare no effort to protect it.
