[문재인 대통령 당선] 프란체스코 교황의 ‘겸손함’과 ‘온유함’

[아시아엔=프라모드 마터 인도 <스폿필름> 발행인 아시아엔 인도 지사장] 최근 인도와 미국의 정치적 변화는 시사평론가들을 흥분시키고 있다. 프랑스 역시 1년 전 영국에서 일어난 것과 같은 일을 겪고 있다. 지금 세계는 변화의 태풍에 휩싸이고 있다. 사람들은 지금 상황이 계속 되길 바라지 않고 있다. 특히 제 정신이 아닌 정치인들이 권력 잡는 것을 더 이상 용납할 수 없다고 한다. 그것은 당연한 반응이다. 사람들은 정치인들이 높은 지위를 이용해 개인 이득을 취하고 권력을 남용하는 것을 늘상 봐왔다. 정치권에서 겸손함과 온유함은 실종된 지 오래다.

프란치스코 교황은 최근 TED강연에서 권력과 겸손에 관하여 중요한 메시지를 전달했다. “더 많은 힘을 갖게 되면 당신의 행동이 다른 사람들에게 더 많은 영향을 미치게 됩니다. 그럴수록 더 겸손하게 행동해야 할 책임이 당신한테 있습니다. 그렇지 못하면 당신이 가진 권력은 당신 자신과 다른 사람들을 망치는 결과를 초래하게 됩니다. 아르헨티나에 이런 말이 있습니다. ‘권력은 빈속에 술을 마시는 것과 같다. 술에 취하면 어지럽고 균형을 잃게 돼 결국 자신과 주위 사람들을 해치게 된다. 권력은 겸손함과 온유함을 함께 동반해야만 한다.”

비슷한 맥락으로 인도의 철학자이자 국왕의 자문을 맡았던 차나캬(Chanakya 340~293 BCE)는 “국민의 행복은 왕의 행복이어야 하고 국민의 복지는 왕의 복지여야 한다. 왕에게는 개인적인 일도, 혼자만 즐거울 일도 없다. 왕의 궁극적인 의무는 국민의 행복과 안녕을 돌보는 일이어야 한다”고 했다.

정확히 3년 전, 인도 국민들은 128년간 이어져온 인도 국민회의당의 집권을 거부하고 모디 수상과 그의 인도 인민당을 선택했다. 모디 수상은 부정부패가 없는 정부를 만들 것을 약속했고 유권자들은 그의 말을 믿었다. 자신이 한 약속을 지키고, 인도에 만연해 있는 부정부패와 싸워 나가는 것이 모디 수상의 도전이다. 특히 그에게 비협조적인 언론, 좌익 진보주의자, 지식인 및 로비스트들은 계속해서 모디 수상을 향해 총을 겨누고 있는 것과 같은 상황이다.

인도와 멀리 떨어져 있는 한국에서도 현직의 박근혜 전 대통령이 탄핵당한 후 5월 9일 열렸다. 인권변호사 출신으로 노무현 전 대통령의 친구이기도 한 문재인 후보가 당선됐다. 최근 한국이 겪고 있는 정치·사회적 소용돌이에서 문재인 후보의 당선은 예상돼 왔다. 그는 민주주의를 수호하고 국민들의 자신감을 회복시켜 나가야 한다. 또 국민의 행복을 최우선시 한다는 것을 국민들에게 확신시켜 주어야 한다.

무엇보다 프란치스코 교황의 조언대로 겸손함을 유지해야만 한다. 동시에 차나캬가 왕에게 전한 “국민의 행복이 왕의 행복이어야만 한다”는 경구를 늘 새겨야 할 것이다.

 

Humility and Tenderness

The political changes at the helms of affairs in India and America in recent times have sent political commentators in a tizzy. France is now experiencing what Britain experienced nearly a year back. There is a wind of change blowing.

The message seems to be loud and clear. People around the world would not like the status quo to continue and allow power crazy politicians to take them for a ride any longer.

It is a natural reaction. People have watched the politicians who wield power and exploit their high office for personal gains or steer their own agenda. In the realms of politics, humility and tenderness got lost over the years.

In a recent TED talk, Pope Francis shared an important message about power and humility. He said, “…the more powerful you are, the more your actions will have an impact on people. The more responsible you are to act humble…if you don’t, your power will ruin you and you will ruin the other.” He stressed further, “…there is a saying in Argentina: “Power is like drinking gin on an empty stomach. You feel dizzy, you get drunk, you lose your balance, and you will end up hurting yourself and those around you, if you don’t connect your power with humility and tenderness”.

In a similar vein, the Indian philosopher and royal adviser, Chanakya (c. 340-293 BCE), said, “People’s happiness should be King’s happiness. Welfare of people is King’s welfare. For a king, there is no task which is only individualistic and pleasurable to him alone. It is King’s utmost duty to look after progress and welfare of people of his country.”

It was exactly three years back, the Indian electorate rejected the rule of the 128 year old Congress party and chose to vote for Prime Minister Modi and his party. The slew of financial scandals that surfaced during the rule of the previous Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, were enough for the change.

In his election speeches, Prime Minister Modi had promised a corruption free government and voters believed him. His challenge is to keep his word and fight rampant corruption within the Indian system. Particularly since a not-so-friendly media along with status quoists, left-liberals, intellectuals and lobbyists continue to gun for him for dividing Indian society.

Far away from New Delhi, in South Korea, after the impeachment and dismissal of incumbent Park Geun-hye, the 19th South Korean presidential election is scheduled to be held in May 2017. Column after column have been written about the charges of corruption proven in the Constitutional Court. It showed how Park got implicated in the rigmarole of undue financial favours involving an industrial house through proxy.

Moon Jae-in is currently considered the frontrunner to win Korea’s next presidential election. As a human rights lawyer, Moon was a friend of deceased President, Roh Moo-hyun.

Perhaps, Moon Jae-in would be the perfect choice in view of the political and social turmoil that Korea has witnessed in recent times. As a human rights activist, he will have to safeguard the democracy and rebuild the confidence of the people.

Moon Jae-in will have to assure people that true democracy and the “people’s happiness”willbehispriority.Hewillhavetosteerclearfrompartisanpoliticsandstayawayfrompettyfinancialmisdemeanour.

He may like to follow the advice of Pope Francis and remain humble. At the same time follow the principles that Chanakya wrote for the kings, “People’s happiness should be King’s happiness….”
