아시아기자협회, 화상회의로 코로나시대 외연 확대‥작년 7월 이후 총 28차례 개최

2020년 7월 9일 아시라프 달리(이집트), 푸네 네다이(이란), 하비브 토우미(바레인), 쿠반 엡디만(키르기스스탄), 군짓 스라(인도), 란 퐁(베트남), 이반 림(싱가포르), 알린 페레르(필리핀), 빌랄 바살(프랑스), 나시르 아이자즈(파키스탄) 이상기(한국) 등 아랍권, 중앙아시아, 서남아시아, 동남아, 동아시아 등 아시아 전역에서 20여명이 참여하며 시작된 아시아기자협회 화상회의가 2021년 10월 14일 28회를 맞이했습니다. 첫 회부터 화상회의의 사회를 맡아 온 바레인의 하비브 토우미가 그간의 소감을 전합니다.

[아시아엔=하비브 토우미 바레인 뉴스에이전시 편집장] 코로나19 발생 반년쯤 지난 작년 7월 초, 아시아엔 창간의 뿌리가 된 아시아기자협회(AJA, 이하 아자) 온라인 대화방에서 부회장인 에디 수프랍토 전 인도네시아 RCTI 보도국장이 제안을 했다.

“코로나 상황이 정상화할 때까지 줌(Zoom) 애플리케이션을 이용해 얼굴을 마주보면서 만나면 어떨까”

에디는 “직접 만날 수 없는 한계를 극복하기 위해서 ‘거리 사슬’을 끊어낼 기술을 활용하자. 대면 미팅을 할 순 없다고 해도 얼마든지 친목을 다지면서 만남을 이어갈 방법을 찾자”고 했다. 그러면서 에디는 내게 진행자 역할을 맡아달라고 했다. 나는 그의 제안을 즉석에서 받아들였다.

아자 회원들은 아시아 극동에 위치한 한국에서 중동까지 6~7시간 시차의 거리에 살고 있어서 이를 극복하는 게 첫째 과제였다. 특히 시리아 출신으로 프랑스 파리에서 웹디자이너로 활동하는 빌랄 바살의 경우 9시간의 시차를 감수해야 했다. 우리는 각자를 시차의 고려해 한국시간으로 목요일 저녁 7시에 줌 회의를 하기로 결정했다. (이후 아자는 2021년 1월부터 4달간 토요일에, 이후 다시 목요일로 변경해 회의를 개최하고 있다.) 아자에 새로운 역사가 만들어진 것이다.

우리는 2020년 7월 9일 첫 회의 이후 지난 10월 14일까지 모두 28차례 회의를 줌 회의를 개최했다. 처음 줌 회의를 시작할 때 셀카에는 비교적 익숙한 기자들이지만, 다소 어색한 점도 있었다.

우리는 서로 방법을 공유하면서 새로운 의사소통 방법을 익혀가면서 우정과 재미를 더해갔다. 회를 거듭할수록 앱 사용에 능숙해지면서 대화와 토론 참여도와 밀도가 깊어졌다. 매우 긍정적으로 참여하는 까닭에 웃음으로 시작한 회의는 박수로 마무리되곤 했다. 그 사이 아자 회원들은 작년 4월과 올해 4월 두차례 한국기자협회 주최 온라인 세계기자대회에 참가해 코로나19와 기후변화 세션에 참여하면서 국제회의에 대한 자신감을 더 갖게 됐다.

아자는 지난 1년 3개월여 동안 28차례 줌 회의를 통해 △변화하는 미디어 환경에 보다 대응방안 △코로나19 각국 현황 및 예방 접종 △코로나 백신 등 다양한 주제에 대해 토론하고 아시아엔과 매거진엔에 기고할 주제들을 선정했다.

아자는 미얀마 및 아프간 사태, 레바논 폭발사고, 바이든 미 대통령 당선 등에 대해서도 기탄없는 의견을 냈고, 이를 바탕으로 아시아기자협회 성명 또한 발표했다. 물론 회원들의 소속 국가와 종교적 배경 등에 따라 약간의 의견 차이는 불가피하지만, 토론을 통해 이를 극복해 냈다. 의견이 엇갈린 아프간 사태에 대해서는 문제 해결에 필요한 기사를 적극 발굴, 보도함으로써 이 문제를 외면하지 않았다. 또 도쿄올림픽에 대해서도 아시아 각국의 이모저모를 공유한 것도 줌 미팅이 가져다준 수확이었다.

회원들은 자신이 살아온 국가 및 문화적 배경, 연령 및 성별의 차이, 몇몇 사안에 대한 의견 차이에도 불구하고, 항상 생산적인 결과를 도출하려 노력했다. 누군가에게 우월감을 갖거나 소모적인 논쟁은 결코 없었다고 나는 확신한다. 28차례 회의를 진행해오면서 피로감을 느끼거나 싫증을 느끼는 사람은 단 한 사람도 없었다고 필자는 자부한다.

“나에게 AJA는 가족이 되었고 나는 그들을 내 가족처럼 사랑한다.” 키르기스스탄의 누르잔 기자의 이 말이 우리 줌 미팅을 가장 잘 표현한 게 아닌가 싶다.

28 meetings in 15 months···For AJA, Zoom is pandemic lifeline for open dialogues

Early in July 2020, during a conversation on the AJA WhatsApp Group, our Indonesian friend Eddy suggested we use the Zoom application to meet as we wait for the world to return to normalcy and meet face to face.

“We must utilize technology to break the distance chain. We can hold a friendly meeting before we meet physically. Habib can act as a moderator,” he said.

The suggestion was promptly taken up by the group and the challenges of selecting a date and a time convenient to everyone across the seven hours zones that separated us from Korea to Paris were gradually ironed out.

The first Zoom meeting was held on July 9 and history was made for the association that has been able to bring together media figures across Asia. A new way of open and instant communication by AJA and for AJA was launched.

Since the first meeting on that historic July 9, 2020, until today, AJA has held 28 meetings using Zoom.
When we first met, most of us were familiar with using selfies with more or less great art.

But with Zoom, we now had to look at cameras and ensure that the video and the sound were working properly. At first, most of us had no idea how to contend with broadcasting our face or ensuring the proper use of the mike on our mobiles when we were not using laptops. It was not always easy, and we had fun moments guiding and assisting one another master this novel way of communicating.

But soon, everybody felt at ease using the application and we became so positively engaged in our conversations and discussions that we never had bored faces or upset grimaces.

We realized later how important the “training” on using Zoom when the AJA members who participated in the annual World Journalists Conference organized by the Journalists Association of Korea demonstrated high levels of confidence in the international conferences.

During our Zoom meeting, we covered matters related to AJA, plans to make it more relevant in the everchanging media landscape across the globe, issued statements and reviewed country reports on several topics, mainly COVID-19, vaccinations···.

AJA also expressed its admirable opinion on the Myanmar and Afghan incidents, the Lebanese explosion, and the election of U.S. President Biden, and based on this, he also issued a statement from the Asian Journalists Association. Of course, some differences in opinions are inevitable depending on the member’s country and religious background, but they have overcome them through discussions. AJA did not turn a blind eye to the issue by actively discovering and reporting articles needed to solve the problem. In addition, sharing various aspects of Asian countries about the Tokyo Olympics was also a harvest brought by the zoom meeting.

Despite the differences in our backgrounds, cultures and ages and in spite of our divergent views on some issues, we always had productive dialogues, never any of the combative debates where people feel superior or seek to be victorious.

Although we have had 28 meetings, we never felt any kind of Zoom fatigue or grew tired of sitting for a round of both easy and serious dialogues.

“For me, AJA has turned into a family and I love meeting my family members,” Nurzhan, from Kyrgyzstan, said.
