[특별기고] 탈레반 숙청리스트 포함 ‘아프간타임스’ 편집국장

<아시아엔>은 지난 8월 15일 탈레반의 아프가니스탄 수도 카불 점령을 즈음해 현지의 유력 언론인 인터뷰를 시도했습니다. 특히 영어로 발행돼 아프간 국내소식을 해외에 알리는 주요한 창구가 되고 있는 <아프가니스탄타임스>(이하 아프간타임스, Afghanistan Times)의 만수르 파이지(Mansoor Faizy) 편집국장과의 인터뷰를 시도했습니다. 아시아기자협회 회장이자 <아시아엔> 아랍어판 편집장인 아시라프 달리 기자가 그에게 수차례 이메일과 SNS 등을 통해 접촉을 시도했지만 연결되지 않았습니다. 나중에 밝혀진 바, 그는 탈레반의 언론사 폐쇄 전 아프가니스탄을 빠져나왔기 때문이었습니다. 만수르 편집국장은 탈레반의 ‘숙청 리스트’에 이름이 포함돼 있었습니다. 만수르 파이지 편집국장이 아시라프 달리 아자 회장을 통해 자신이 아프가니스탄을 빠져나가기 직전 쓴 글을 <아시아엔>에 보내왔습니다. 만수르 편집국장의 글 마지막 대목의 다짐은 탈레반의 카불 점령 이후 폐간 조치로 당분간은 실현되기 어려운 꿈이 되고 말았습니다. 만수르 편집국장은 현재 중앙아시아의 한 국가에서 향후 활동을 모색하고 있습니다. <편집자>

15년 전 오늘(7월 24일), 우리 신문사는 아프가니스탄 역사상 처음으로 국영 ‘영자신문’ 발행을 시작했다. 주로 국내 뉴스를 다루는 우리 <아프칸타임스>(Afghanistan Times)의 사명은 무엇보다도 객관성, 공정성, 그리고 전문성 높은 기사의 보도였다.

금년은 <아프간타임스>가 창간 15주년 되는 해다. 2006년 7월 25일 아프간에서 그 누구도 시도하지 않은 영자신문이 선을 보였고, 우리는 아프가니스탄의 진정한 언론자유의 상징으로 탄생했다.

창간 이후 아프간타임스는 정치, 경제, 연예, 스포츠 등 수많은 영역의 기사와 논평, 그리고 칼럼으로 독자에게 다가갔다. 지난 15년 동안 아프간타임스는 전문성 높은 콘텐츠로 날로 증대하는 독자들과 함께 성장해 왔다.  

우리 아프간타임스는 여타 매체와 달리 아프간 국내에서 영문 매체로 우뚝서며 중심 미디어로 자리매김했다는 사실을 자신있게 말할 수 있다. 이는 결코 과장이 아니다. 우리 구성원들은 직무에 헌신하며 미디어전문가들과 한팀을 이뤄 보도의 객관성과 전문성 제고에 최선을 다해왔다.

나는 15년 전 8면으로 발행된 창간호를 생생히 기억한다. 지금은 칼라 4면을 포함해 모두 12면으로 발행된다. 지나온 과정은 말 그대로 울퉁불퉁 험난한 길이었다. 아프가니스탄에서 언론사로서 생존하는 것은 정말 힘에 부치는 일이었다.

하지만 우리는 결코 굴복하지 않았다. 독자들에게 공정하고, 편견 없는 뉴스와 오피니언을 전달하기 위해 불철주야 노력했다고 감히 자부할 수 있다. 우리는 또 대표적인 해외신문들을 준거로 리포트 테크닉 개발에도 적극 나섰다.

아프간의 독자적인 영자신문사로서, 자원은 많이 부족하지만 그런 가운데서도 미디어 역할을 다했다는 자부심이 있다. 아프간타임스는 피처스토리, 코멘터리, 사설, 독자의 소리, 시사성 있는 그림, 그리고 풍자만화 등을 통해 여론의 방향을 올바르게 이끌며 대중을 일깨우는 역할을 맡아왔다.

2009년 7월부터 우리 회사는 운영 자금이 원활치 않아 기자들과 직원들에게 제대로 된 보상을 못해왔다. 하지만 역경 속에서도 아프간타임스는 아프간 국내 인쇄매체에서 한줄기 빛을 발하고 있다.

2020년 들어 유례없는 코로나 바이러스 확산으로 아프가니스탄 언론사들 역시 어려운 시기를 겪고 있다. 수많은 종이 및 디지털 매체는 자금 부족으로 운영을 중단하고 있다. 수입 폭락으로 일부 매체는 폐업했으며, 또 다른 매체들은 직원을 해고시켜 인원감축에 나서고 있다.

하지만 우리 <아프간타임스>는 코로나 팬데믹에도 불구하고 동요하지 않았다. 경제적 난관에도 임직원들이 걱정 없이 계속 일할 수 있도록 했다.

우리 <아프간타임스>는 탈레반의 무력통치가 종식된 이후 신문 발간 15년을 쉼 없이 달려왔듯이, 코로나에도 불구하고 아프가니스탄의 대표신문으로 계속 정진해 나갈 것이다. <번역 김동연 미주통신원>

Fifteen years ago today, we began our sojourn as Afghanistan’s first national institution to publish English news content, with a focus on the country’s current affairs – a mission characterized by objectivity, impartiality and professionalism.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Afghanistan Times, which was established on July 25th 2006 as a trailblazing English newspaper and a genuine symbol of freedom of speech.

We have been covering the world of politics, economics, entertainment and sports ever since, with columns for opinion and commentaries. Over these years, we have been growing exponentially in terms of professional news content, reaching out to more readers.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Afghanistan Times has reached a landmark and a central component which distinguishes us from all others and makes us the preeminent place for English journalism in the country. There has been respect to precepts of objective journalism and professionalism, with the use of its team of committed journalists and media specialists.

The newspaper printed its first issue in carnets as an eight-page newspaper, now it is in twelve pages – four in color. It has been a bumpy road for us. Surviving all these years in Afghanistan has not been easy.

We can proudly say that we have strived immensely to disseminate impartial information and unbiased news content and opinion to our readers. We have also developed our reporting techniques to match standards of flagship international newspapers.

As an independent English paper, we pride ourselves in achieving what we have in the face of meager resources. We have played an important role in enlightening public opinion with our feature stories, commentaries, and editorials, opinions from our readers, pictures, and cartoons.

We have not received any funding for our operations since July 2009 and we are indebted to our indefatigable journalists and personnel for their hard work. Regardless of its predicaments, Afghanistan Times keeps shining in the print media industry.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, media outlets in Afghanistan faced a major drawback. A number of print media and digital media outlets suspended their operations as funds kept shrinking.

Some even closed their doors permanently when they saw their revenue plunge, and some went for a major downsizing to the detriment of the journalist community. But Afghanistan Times was unfazed by the vicissitudes of the pandemic. It kept its staff in spite of a crippling economic downturn.

After fifteen years of working in the post-Taliban era, Afghanistan Times won’t take this opportunity for granted and will continue with its unbridled mission to be a leading newspaper for many more years to come.
