누군가는 “가장 큰 폭탄은 우리 청년들과 우리의 삶 한가운데 떨어졌다”고 적었다.
전쟁은 아이들을 죽인다. 지금까지 이란을 향한 공격으로 여러 아이와 여성이 목숨을 잃었다. 대부분 잠들어 있을 때였다. 북서부 도시 타브리즈에서는 7살짜리 아이 두 명이 어젯밤 숨졌다. 불과 몇 주 전만 해도 알리산과 타하는 초등학교 1학년을 마친 기념으로 잔치를 열었다. 그들은 2학년 교실에 들어갈 수 없게 됐다.

War kills dreams. In my report yesterday, I wished I could soon write to you that the war was over. But just a few hours later, when I woke up, Trump had bombed a nuclear facility near Isfahan in central Iran. This likely marks the first day of a new era for the world and the region. Today, someone wrote that the main bomb fell right in the middle of our youth and our lives.
War kills children. So far, several children and women have died in the attacks on Iran. Most were asleep at the time. Two seven-year-old children in Tabriz, a city in northwestern Iran, were among the victims of last night’s strikes on several Iranian cities. A few weeks ago, Alisan and Taha celebrated finishing first grade. They will never reach second grade.
Today, I called a friend at the Mahak Institute, a renowned private charity that treats children with cancer. My friend, once a journalist, lost his job due to pressure from government hardliners and now works for these children. He said the situation is dire. Stress is like poison for these children, and the terrifying sounds of gunfire at night add to their suffering. He also said that the war has made funding and access to medicine difficult. Many children have been discharged and are now at home without essential medicine and care. My friend wept as he spoke. “We have a psychologist available 24 hours for the children, but it’s not enough,” he said.
War kills beauty. Today was the first day of summer — the end of school exams and the start of vacations and family trips. But all of this has been forgotten. Several Iranian footballers who had returned home during the league break were unable to rejoin their teams due to canceled flights. The most famous is Mehdi Taremi, Inter Milan’s forward. Inter Milan is currently playing in the Club World Cup in the United States, but Taremi could not join the squad. Some Iranian fans in the U.S. went to the stadium waving a flag with Taremi’s image. He was not there, but his name and memory were.
War destroys all of this — and every human emotion and capacity. Who truly wants war? Some analysts believe Trump and Netanyahu welcomed it to distract from domestic failures.
