[아시아엔=바누 란잔 차크라보르티 ATN 방글라TV 보도국장] “한국 투자자들은 방글라데시에 상당 규모의 투자를 할 준비가 되어 있다.”성기학 영원무역 회장이 이끄는 대표단은 지난 7일 다카에서 무하마드 유누스 방글라데시 수석고문(과도정부 수반, 대통령급)과의 면담에서 이런 내용의 투자 의향을 발표했다.
한국대표단에는 섬유, 패션, 방적, 물류, 의료, 전력, 신재생에너지 분야에 걸친 LG를 비롯한 한국의 유수 기업 대표들이 포함됐다. 대표단은 영원무역이 운영하는 항구도시 차토그램의 한국수출가공특구(KEPZ)를 둘러봤다. 이들 중 일부는 즉각 투자를 약속했다.
유누스 수석고문은 특히 노동, 산업, 에너지, 투자 부문에서 비즈니스 환경을 개선하기 위해 방글라데시에서 진행 중인 개혁을 소개했다. 성기학 회장은 “영원무역은 차토그램에 섬유패션대학을 설립해 현지 인재 공급을 지원할 예정”이라고 밝혔다. 한국의 패션 및 유통업계 대표들도 방글라데시의 통합공급망을 통해 방글라데시에서 의류를 생산할 계획을 밝혔다.
성기학 영원무역 회장, 방글라데시 명예시민권 받아
한편 방글라데시 기성복(RMG) 및 섬유 분야의 선구자인 성기학 영원무역 회장이 산업계와 국가 경제에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 방글라데시 명예시민권을 받았다. 무하마드 유누스 수석고문은 지난 4월 9일 인터컨티넨탈호텔에서 열린 ‘방글라데시 투자 서밋-2025’에서 성기학 회장에게 명예시민권을 수여했다.
성기학 회장은 “명예시민권을 받게 되어 진심으로 영광스럽다”며 감사의 뜻을 표했다. 성 회장은 방글라데시의 차토그램, 다카, 그리고 최근에는 한국 EPZ에 투자하며 기성복 부문의 선구자 역할을 해왔다. 영원무역 방글라데시 현지공장에선 고품질 재킷, 바지, 운동화, 가죽제품 등을 생산하여 세계시장에 공급하고 있다. 영원무역은 1980년 5월 방글라데시 섬유 및 의류 수출 부문 첫 번째 투자자로서 새 역사를 열었다.
영원무역은 특히 방글라데시 산업계에서 여성 고용을 촉진하는 데 핵심적인 역할을 수행했다. 여성 고용은 곧바로 방글라데시가 글로벌 의류 생산 허브로 발전하는데 크게 기여했다. 영원무역은 방글라데시 전역에서 약 73,000명의 직원을 고용하고 있다.
“한국, 방글라데시 경제성장 실질 지원“
“한국은 방글라데시 경제의 질적성장 노력에 지원할 만반의 준비가 돼 있다.” 박영식 주방글라데시 한국대사는 최근 다카에서 열린 방글라데시 해외 특파원협회(OCAB) 회원들과의 간담회에서 이같이 말했다. 박 대사는 “방글라데시는 경제성장의 양적인 면뿐만 아니라 질에 초점을 맞춰야 한다”며 “경제성장의 질은 외국기업이 실질적으로 기여할 수 있는 혁신, 지식, 기술 분야가 주도해야 한다”고 말했다.
박 대사는 방글라데시가 경제성장을 앞당기기 위해서는 제조업 부문을 강화해야 한다고 말했다. 방글라데시의 무역과 관련해 박영식 대사는 “기성복, 황마, 신발, 의약품, 경공업 제품과 같은 기존 부문의 확장이 필요하다”며 “수도 다카는 한국 및 다른 여러 국가와 협상 중인 FTA(자유무역협정)로 무역의 일대 전환을 꾀할 수도 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
South Korean companies set to invest in Bangladesh’s RMG sector

Dhaka (Bangladesh): South Korean investors are poised to make substantial investments in Bangladesh. A delegation led by Youngone Corporation Chairman Kihak Sung made this announcement during a meeting with Chief Adviser of Bangladesh Dr. Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka.
The South Korean delegation included representatives from leading Korean companies such as LG, and others operating in textiles, fashion, spinning, logistics, healthcare, power, and renewable energy sectors. The delegation toured the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) in port city Chattogram, managed by Youngone Corporation, where several investors pledged immediate investments.
Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus highlighted ongoing reforms in Bangladesh to improve the business environment, particularly in labour, industrial, energy, and investment sectors. Kihak Sung confirmed that Youngone Corporation will soon establish a textile and fashion college in Chattogram to support the local talent pipeline. Representatives from Korea’s fashion and retail sectors also signalled plans to source garments from Bangladesh, citing the country’s integrated supply chain.
Chairman of Youngone Corporation given honorary citizenship in Bangladesh
Kihak Sung, Chairman of Youngone Corporation and a pioneer in Bangladesh’s readymade garments (RMG) and textile sectors, was awarded honorary citizenship of Bangladesh for his outstanding contributions to the industry and the country’s economy.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus presented the citizenship document to Kihak Sung at the Bangladesh Investment Summit-2025 at the InterContinental Hotel on 9 April 2025.
Expressing his gratitude, Sung said, “I am truly honoured to receive this honorary citizenship.” Sung has been a pioneering force in the RMG sector in Bangladesh with his investments spanning Chattogram, Dhaka EPZs, and, more recently, the Korean EPZ. Youngone’s factories produce high-quality jackets, trousers, sports shoes, and leather goods for international markets. Youngone made history as the first investor in Bangladesh’s textile and apparel export sector in May 1980. The company also played a key role in promoting female employment in the industry, contributing to Bangladesh’s evolution into a global garment production hub. Currently, the company employs about 73,000 people across Bangladesh, making it one of the country’s largest employers.
‘South Korea to support Bangladesh’s quality economic growth’
South Korea is ready to support Bangladesh’s efforts to achieve quality economic growth. South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Park Young-sik made this remark recently during talks with the members of Overseas Correspondents Association of Bangladesh (OCAB) in Dhaka.
He said, “Bangladesh should focus not just on the quantity, but the quality of its economic growth,” “The quality of economic growth must be driven by innovation, knowledge and technology areas where foreign companies can make substantial contributions,” he said.
Ambassador Park said, Bangladesh needs to boost its manufacturing sector for rapid economic growth. Speaking about Bangladesh’s trade sector Ambassador Park said there should be expansion in existing sectors such as RMG, jute, footwear, pharmaceuticals and light industrial goods. New items can be added, and trade can also be diverted from other countries due to FTA (Free Trade Agreement) that Dhaka is negotiating with South Korea and several other countries, he said.
Saying Bangladesh has great potential for infrastructure development Ambassador Park said Korea aims to become a major partner in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development as it has achieved in RMG.
