이란, 사우디에 대표단 파견···’하지 성지순례’ 안전문제 논의

[아시아엔=라드와 아시라프 기자·번역 최정아 기자] 이란 정부가 이슬람 최대 연중행사인 ‘하지’(Hajj) 성지순례 행사준비를 논의하기 위해 사우디아라비아(이하 사우디)에 대표단을 파견한다고 이란 현지 <타스님 통신>(Tasnim news agency)이 보도했다.
이란 하지(hajj) 담당 위원회의 사이드 오하디(Saeed Ohai) 위원장은 “대표단을 오는 14일 사우디 수도 리야드에 파견해 하지 성지순례 안전문제 및 행사계획에 대해 논의하기로 했다”고 밝혔다. 지난해 이슬람 성지순례지 사우디 메카에서 사상 최악의 압사사고가 일어나 수많은 이란 무슬림들이 사망했다. 이로 인해 이람-사우디 양국관계가 악화일로를 걸었다.
사우디 당국은 지난해 압사 참사 이후 이틀 뒤 769명이 사망하고 934명이 부상했다고 공식발표했으나, 그 이후 추가로 발생한 사상자 발표를 하지 않고 있다. 한 국제단체의 발표에 따르면, 지난해 하지 성지순례에 참가한 무슬림 2천70명이 숨져 사상 최악의 참사로 기록됐다.
이란 당국은 지난해 메카에서 사망한 이란인이 461명에 달하지만 사우디 정부가 이에 참사에 대해 묵묵부답으로 일관하고 있다며 비판하며 양국의 관계도 악화됐다.
Iran to resume hajj discussions with Saudi Arabia
According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Iran plans to send a delegation to Saudi Arabia to discuss new hajj arrangments, in the first official visit by either side after the ties between the two countries were severed in January 2016.
The head of Iran’s hajj organisation, Saeed Ohadi, said Saudi authorities had invited Tehran to send a delegation to Riyadh on April 14 to discuss preparations for hajj after the pilgrimage was marred last year by a deadly crash that killed hundreds of people, many of them Iranians which ruined the relations between the two countries.
According to state news agency IRNA the Iranian delegation members were still waiting for their visas and were expecting to meet the Saudi hajj minister. “The fate of this year’s hajj will be decided in this meeting,” one of the members said, according to Tasnim news agency.
Saudi officials have stood by their official counts of 769 dead and 934 injured, figures that have not been updated since two days after the crash. While according to international tallies, the numbers go up to 2,070, making it one of the deadliest hajj disasters.
While Saudi King Salman ordered an investigation into the causes of the crash, butt more than six months after the disaster, no findings have been published.
Iranian officials have accused Riyadh of mishandling the response and complained of delays in repatriating the bodies of the 461 Iranian nationals who died in Mecca. Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran after demonstrators angry at the execution of a prominent Shia cleric attacked Saudi diplomatic missions.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, who is also the interior minister and head of the Supreme Hajj Committee, vowed at a recent hajj committee meeting to “firmly deal” with any attempt to undermine security at the pilgrimage, according to Saudi media.
