[아시아라운드업] 중국 천연기념물 판다 ‘수난시대’
[아시아엔=편집국] 멸종위기 야생동물 판다를 불법으로 포획해 모피와 식용으로 밀매한 일당이 체포됐다. 중국 <CCTV>는 “판다 불법밀렵 용의자 10명이 체포됐다”며 “판다 모피 및 9.75kg의 살코기가 증거로 압수됐다”고 13일 보도했다. <차이나 데일리>도 죽은 판다의 뼈, 모피, 냉동 고기 등이 담긴 사진과 함께 “밀렵된 판다의 머리와 쓸개가 발견됐다’고 보도했다.
용의자들은 윈난성 남부도시 자오퉁에서 사냥총 등을 이용해 판다를 포획했다. 판다는 중국 천연기념물로 지정돼 있다. 판다는 중국 국내에 2014년 기준 1864마리가 서식하는 것으로 파악됐으며, 현재 생존해있는 야생판다 2000마리 이하인 것으로 알려졌다. 이 때문에 중국당국은 판다 밀렵을 엄격하게 금지하고 있으며, 판다를 밀렵·밀수할 경우 최하 10년형에서 종신형 및 사형 등 중형에 처하고 있다.
이에 대해 중국 네티즌들은 <웨이보> 등 SNS를 통해 “판다는 중국을 상징하는 동물이다. 이 같은 사건이 더 이상 일어나지 않도록 당국의 강력한 조치가 필요하다”고 했다.

Ten people have been detained in China over suspicion of hunting a panda, primarily to sell its fur and meat. Police discovered its skin and 9.75kg of meat in a raid in December.
Officers said the panda was shot dead by two brothers in Zhaotong in southern Yunnan province.
With fewer than 2, 000 pandas left in the wild in China, panda poaching is extremely rare as endangered animals are seen as national treasure.
In 2014, there were only about 1,864 pandas left in the wild, all in China.
The crime was heavily condemned on social media in China. “To the Chinese, giant panda is more than an animal. It’s a spiritual symbol. The case needs to be dealt with severely to stop any further incidents like this,” said one (Chinese social media site) Weibo user called Gloomy Thick Eyebrows.
Photos of the dead (adult female) panda’s bloodied pelt, meat and bones were circulated on social media. The China Daily newspaper said parts of the panda’s skull and its gallbladder were also found.
The two hunters and one person who allegedly bought the panda meat were among those arrested.
Hunting pandas in China can lead to a 10-year sentence or, even life imprisonment or death in some cases what Chinese government terms as ‘grave circumstances’.
