? Editor’s note

Hope and Courage in Marawi City, Philippines

By: Alin Ferrer

On May 22, the Maute group attacked Marawi City (Philippines) and set it ablaze. The incident was allegedly inspired by ISIS as the Mautes are a group of bandits who pretend to be Muslin jihadists. As of June 20, more than 257 terrorists, 62 soldiers, and 50 civilians were killed in the attack, leaving thousands with looted homes, businesses, and destroyed livelihoods.

Currently, Marawi is a ghost town even though several villages began reconstruction immediately following Independence Day celebrations on June 12. Marawi is part of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), and the Philippine Statistics Authority has listed Marawi as the most populous on the region. About 90% here are Muslim and of Maranao descent. Marano means “people of Lake Lanao”. Visitors to Marawi will notice that the city’s hills are directly adjacent to beautiful Lake Lanao.

And while Marawi can’t claim of being prosperous, its people are a proud one of their history and culture.? The?Maranaos?are known for their skills in trade and business matters.? Marawi is thus the capital of the region and plays an important role in commerce and industry.? The people are also known for their high-quality and colorful sleeping mats (banig), blankets (malong) and woven products (habi).? Of agriculture, they produce rice, corn, fish.? Even in these modern times, market trading and commercial ventures enliven the entrepreneurial life of Marawi City. Hard work and hope for a better future are the solid foundations of the?Maranao.

Ana, a businesswoman who owns her own caf?/bakery in Marawi, successfully ran her business by catering to the tastes of the Maranao people. She had a generous heart and a work ethic that created quite a large flow of regulars to her caf?. Unfortunately, as the Marawi crisis hit her area, like other families in the city, Ana had to make the tragic decision to close and leave her shop.

When she returned, she discovered her shop in disarray. The terrorists had stolen all the money and taken the food. Though she felt that her dream had crumbled right before her eyes, she did not want the Mautes to win. Half-jesting, she said the terrorists must have really liked her cake because they didn’t leave anything.

Her positivity and hope despite the circumstances show just how hopeful Maranaos are in the aftermath of the chaos. Buildings may have crumbled, but the Marawi spirit is undying.
