터키 에르도안 ‘언론 길들이기’ 돌입?···정부 비판 매체 ‘자만’ 강제매각

[아시아엔=라드와 아시라프 기자·번역 최정아 기자] 터키 정부가 언론의 자유를 강력히 규제하고 있는 가운데, 터키 정부에 비판적인 논조를 보여왔던 유력 일간 <자만>(Zaman)이 매각됐다.
이스탄불 법원은 지난 4일 <자만>을 소유하고 있는 ‘페자 미디어 그룹’(Feza Media Group)을 인수할 신탁자를 선정했다고 밝혔다. ‘페자 미디어 그룹’은 일간 <자만>, 터키 최대 민간통신사 <지한 통신사>(Cihan news agency)를 소유하고 있다. 경찰은 <자만> 이스탄불 본사 앞에서 건물로 진입하려하는 시위대를 막고 나서는 등 경찰-시위대 간 충돌도 있었다. 지난 5일(현지시간) 경찰은 시위대를 진압하기 위해 최루탄과 물대포를 사용해 시위진압을 시도했다.
<자만> 매각에 대해 터키 아흐메트 다부토울루 총리는 “이번 법원 판결과 터키정부는 전혀 연관이 없다”며 관련 의혹을 강력히 부인했다.
<앙카라 통신>에 따르면, 터키 이슬람학자이자 교육 운동가인 페툴라 귤렌은 “정부를 비판하는 터키 매체들이 있다. 하지만 이들 중 그 누구도 합법적인 매체로 인정받지 못하고 있다. 언론매체가 언론의 자유를 보장받지 못하고 있는 셈이다. 정부에게 힘을 실어주는 보도들이 넘쳐날 뿐이다“라고 밝혔다. 페툴라 귤렌은 에르도안의 정적으로 불리며, 현재 미국에 거주하고 있다.
한편 <자만>을 새롭게 이끌 인사들이 지명된 직후, 지난 6일 ‘일요판’에선 정부를 지지하는 논조의 기사들이 실렸다.
Turkish government takes over Zaman newspaper in a conflicting raid
Turkish authorities seized control of the media company that owns the country’s best-selling Zaman newspaper, a one-time supporter of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that became one of his fiercest critics.
An Istanbul court appointed a trustee on Friday to oversee the company, Feza Media Group, which includes Zaman newspaper as well as Zaman daily and Cihan news agency. On Friday 4th March, Police dispersed protesters who had gathered outside the Istanbul headquarters before breaking down a gate and entering the building to escort the court-appointed managers and evict newspaper workers. On Saturday 5th March, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters who again gathered outside the building.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu denied any links between the government takeover of the paper and changes in its editorial policy, saying the seizure had nothing to do with the paper’s criticism of the authorities.
According to Ankara news agency, he said, “There are many media outlets in Turkey that criticize our government. None of them are subjected to legal procedures. What’s in question here is not merely press activity, but rather an operation targeting a legitimate government that came to power with popular support,” referring to Zaman’s affiliation with now US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, a fierce critic of President Erdogan, who was put on a “most-wanted terrorist list” by Turkey.
Among the claims the newspaper faced besides being funded by Gulen, is the claim that the newspaper is cooperating with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist organization to topple the Turkish government and that high-level officials of the two groups have had meetings abroad.
The Sunday edition of the newspaper issued on 6th March under the newly-appointed administration now appears to support the government. According to Sky News Arabia, Zaman newspaper’s former team has launched a new paper of their own, “Yarina Bakis” (“Look to Tomorrow”), local media reported, saying that journalists had decided to remain in line with their previous editorial policy. The new paper reported on the weekend protests in Istanbul.
