‘태양의 후예’ 송중기·송혜교 열풍에 중동서 팬카페까지

<태양의 후예> 인기와 함께 중동에 팬카페가 생기는 등 배우 송중기와 송혜교의 인기도 높아지고 있다. 한류 인기가 치솟으며 아랍에미리트, 사우디아라비아 등 중동 일부 국가에선 한류드라마 수입에 나선다는 소식이 들려오고 있다.

앞으로는 중동 한류팬들도 자국 채널을 통해 한국 드라마를 접할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

<태양의 후예>는 전쟁 중인 지역에 파견된 특전사 유시진과 외과의사 강모연의 로맨스를 그렸다.?<태양의 후예는> 중국에서 반향을 일으켰던 <별에서 온 그대>와 비견할 만한 폭발적인 인기를 누리고 있다.

중국 사회안전부 장관은 중국판 트위터 웨이보 계정에서 “한국 드라마를 보는 것은 매우 위험하며 법적인 문제를 불러일으킬 수 있다”고 경고하며 한국 대중문화의 영향력을 견제할 정도지만, 한류의 열풍은 사그라들줄 모른다.

<태양의 후예> 외국 열혈팬들은 자막 제공 사이트 ‘비키’(Viki)에서 중국어, 영어 등 다양한 언어의 자막으로 작품을 시청하는 것으로 알려졌다. ‘비키’는 한국에서 본방송이 상영된 후 2~3시간 안에 영상을 제공하고 있다.

“Descendants of the Sun” achieves international success

“Descendants of the Sun” is the latest Korean drama to achieve an international success and overseas recognition, having only aired 10 episodes of the intended 16. The drama tells the story of Yoo Si Jin, a captain of the special forces in the military, and Dr. Kang Mo Yeon, and the romance they attempt in a time of war.

The drama achieved an immense success in Asia especially in China where it caused concern with the country’s Ministry of Public Security posting a warning on its official Weibo account against the drama warning viewers “watching Korean dramas could be dangerous, and even lead to legal troubles”. It is part of a growing concern among Chinese officials who are wary of the growing influence of Korean pop culture on the Chinese populace since the similar success of My Love from the Star in 2014.

The drama became available globally on Viki with subtitles in many languages created by the volunteer community. Each episode is available to stream a couple hours after the original Korean broadcast.

In the Middle East, the popularity of the main leads Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo soared, encouraging a number of fansubs and a fanbase in a number of Arabic countries. This is mainly intensified after the news of the first KCON being held in the middle East in UAE, and Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates buying the broadcast rights for the drama, which means that it’s set to be shown on local TV soon.

The drama was translated to over 32 languages and it’s expected to gain more popularity with upcoming episodes.
