여성 실험예술지 ‘피리어드’ 출간, ‘대안 예술’ 사랑하는 여성 누구나 참여 가능

[아시아엔=라훌 아이자즈 기자?·번역 김아람 기자] 기자가 그간 한국생활을 하며 가장 눈여겨보던 것은 ‘대안 예술’이었다. 대안 예술은 기존 주류 예술과는 달리 다양한 실험정신으로 똘똘 뭉쳐 새로운 예술을 창조해내기 때문이다.

최근 한국에서도 대안 예술에 대한 움직임이 일고 있다. 특히 많은 외국인 예술가가 모여 사는 서울에서 최근 여성 예술가들을 위한 예술실험잡지가 외국인을 주축으로 탄생했다. 비영리 예술잡지 ‘피리어드’(Period)가 내년 1월 창간호를 시작으로 새 출발을 알린다.

‘피리어드’는 전세계 여성들이 자신들의 목소리를 다양한 방식으로 표현하고 공유하자는 취지로 만들어졌다.?여성이라면 누구나 이 잡지에 작품을 출품할 수 있으며, 분야는 사진, 일러스트, 시, 산문 등 다양하다.?미국에서도 발행되는 이 잡지는 매달 온라인을 통해 무료로 PDF 파일을 공개한다. 누구나 다운로드 받아 사용 및 공유가 가능하다.

2016년?1월 창간호의 주제는 ‘정체성과 표현’(Identity, Expression)이며, 콜린 루이스 배리 일러스트레이터와 섀런 하이트 사진작가의 작품도 실린다.

이 밖에도 내년도 잡지는 힘(Power), 사랑(Love), 고독과 발견(Solitude & Discovery), 죽음과 변화(Death & Change) 등의 주제로 구성된다.?참여하고 싶다면 매달 20일(마감일)까지 periodlit@gmail.com로 작품과 본인의 프로필을 함께 제출하면 된다. 이전에 출판 경험이 있는 작품이더라도, 출판업자의 동의가 있는 경우 재출판이 가능하다. 한번에 제출할 수 있는 시는 최대 5편, 단편소설은 3편, 시각작품은 10점으로 제한하고 있다.

New Seoul-based zine offers platform for female artists

What has always interested me in Korea is the alternative forms of art. While the mainstream media rules the markets?all around the world, it is the alternative art, music and cinema of a country which push the envelope and experiment and bring in more diversity. And in Korea, specifically in Seoul which is the center of expat community, artists ? local as well as expat ? expose the Korean audience to a variety of art forms and different styles. Now this is exactly what a new Seoul-based print zine aims to do.

The?magazine not-so-subtly named ‘Period’ calls for art submissions for its January issue. The zine is aimed at publishing and providing platform to female artists all around the world. It?aims to give a voice to women who work in the field of photography, illustration, poetry and prose.

Issue #1 comes out in January 2016 with the theme of Identity, Expression. It will feature contributions from artists exploring different ideas through various mediums including pieces from illustrator Colleen Louise Barry and photographer Sharon Heit. Heit, whose work has been featured in a number of excellent publications, will be contributing some of her striking portraits to the magazine.

Each issue will focus on a specific theme to be given life by the artists’ imagination and skills, and which attempts to explore the modern female lifestyle. The themes for the next twelve issues have been decided which cover ideas?like Power, Solitude and Discovery, Pagentry and Religion and many more.

The magazine provides an opportunity for emerging female artists to gain exposure and a ‘platform’ to voice their ideas and talents.?Currently, distribution will be located in Seoul and the US. It will also be available online every month for free download.

The deadline for submissions for January issue is December 20.
