말레이시아, ‘이슬람 상품’으로 해외 관광객 유치 나선다

[아시아엔=노릴라 다우드 아시아기자협회 수석부회장, CAJ 회장 역임] 말레이시아는 곧 다가올 2020 ‘말레이시아 방문의 해’를 앞두고 수백만명의 외국 관광객을 맞이할 준비를 착착 진행하고 있다.

인구 3260만명의 말레이시아는 연방헌법에도 나타나 있듯이 이슬람교를 국교로 하고 있다. 이에 따라 외국인 관광객들은 말레이시아인들의 일상생활에서 이슬람교의 가치가 스며들어 있을 것으로 기대하고 온다.

지난 10년간 말레이시아의 식당과 호텔은 정통 이슬람 음식을 제공하는 것으로 전세계 무슬림 여행자들에게 널리 알려져 왔다.

최근 말레이시아 관광예술문화부는 관광객들을 위해 ‘무슬림 친화적 호텔 인증제’를 도입했다. 이는 말레이시아 정부가 이슬람식 관광 분야를 개발하기 위해 특별히 마련한 제도다.

모하마딘 케타피 관광예술문화부 장관은 최근 ‘무슬림 친화적 관광 포럼’ 연설에서 “말레이시아를 찾는 여행객들이 이슬람에 대해 보다 친근하게 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 이를 도입했다”고 말했다.

모하마딘 장관은 “말레이시아 정부는 이슬람 국가 중 특히 중동 국가에서 오는 여행객들이 말레이시아 관광에 가장 중요한 비중을 차지하는 점을 잘 알고 있다”며 “이들에 대한 배려가 무척 중요하다”고 덧붙였다.

한편, 하자 유스나 유스프 이슬람 문화 전문가는 새로운 관광 자원 개발에 대한 여러 가지 번뜩이는 제안을 했다.

세계적인 여행가로도 잘 알려진 유스나 유스프는 “호텔과 모텔과 홈스테이 장소 등에서 ‘이바다’와 같은 이슬람 의례를 체험할 수 있도록 하면 좋을 것”이라고 말했다.

유스나는 “외국 관광객들이 이슬람 국가인 말레이시아의 이슬람 사원을 방문해 기도 방법이나 이슬람 관련 서적 등을 배운다면 좋은 경험이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

유스나는 말레이시아의 이슬람에 대한 이해를 넓히기 위해 푸삿 이슬람, 푸삿 풍우탄 자카트, 렘바가 타붕하지, 뱅크 이슬람, 샤리아 법원 등을 여행코스로 제안했다.

유스나에 의하면 현지 여행사들도 라마단, 이드 알피트르와 이드 알아드하 등의 기간 동안 외국관광객들이 개인 주택뿐 아니라 이슬람사원에서 이슬람 의식을 보도록 하는 것도 필요하다고 말했다.

그는 인터뷰에서 “라마단 기간에는 관광객들이 무슬림들과 함께 아침을 먹고 기도할 수 있는 사원으로 안내받는다면 관광객들은 이슬람교에 대한 훨씬 깊은 인식과 관심을 갖게 될 것”이라며 “말레이시아 무슬림들과 함께 이슬람 의식을 기꺼이 수행할 수도 있을 것”이라고 말했다.

그는 무슬림들이 불우한 이웃에게 나눠줄 소나 양 등을 도살하는 ‘쿠르반’ 의식을 보여주는 것도 좋은 여행상품이 될 수 있다고 말했다.

유스나는 또 “예언자 무하마드의 탄생축하 행사인 ‘마울리두르 라술’도 말레이시아 방문객들에게 좋은 여행 소스가 될 것”이라고 말했다. <번역 이지후 인턴기자>

Islamic Tourism gives positive perspectives about Islam in Malaysia

Malaysia is ready to welcome millions of international tourists in the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 which is very near the corner.
The country with a population of over 32.6 million people is also known as an Islamic nation as Islam is the religion of the Federation as enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution. As such foreign tourists would expect to see more Islamic values being portrayed and practiced by the Muslims in their daily lives.

For more than a decade, Malaysia has been known globally for its halal food served in restaurants and hotels originally aimed to attract domestic and international Muslim travellers.

Recently, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has introduced the “Muslim Friendly Hotel Recognition” a form of accreditation that recognises “Syaria” compliant accommodation for tourists.
The implementation of the Muslim Friendly Hotel Recognition is an important initiative to empower the tourism industry, specially the Islamic tourism segment to begin developing the industry towards its next phase.

“This recognition will assist those involved in utilising the Muslim Friendly Hotel Recognition to set the standards for others to follow,” said the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, in his speech at the launch of the initiative held during the Muslim Friendly Tourism Forum recently.
Mohamaddin said Malaysia acknowledges the potential of the Islamic tourism sector as travellers from Muslim countries, especially the Middle East, are the biggest spenders in Malaysia’s tourism industry.

Meanwhile Hajah Yusnah Yusuf , an Islamic preacher has more suggestions to enhance the new tourism segment. As a global traveller and Islamic preacher, Yusnah said, hotels, motels and home stay venues should provide a friendly “ibadah” or Islamic rituals and practices facilities.

This includes providing praying mats, qiblat- direction to pray and special room with reading materials about Islam. It is also good to supply information about the nearest mosque or “surau” for them (males) to perform their prayers and socialise with the local Muslims.

She said, the hotels and motels should be alcohol free, provide special places for family gathering as well as separate swimming pools and gymnasiums for the males and the females.

Yusnah also suggested that Muslim or non Muslim travellers/tourists should visit the old, new mosques and Islamic administrative centres such as Pusat Islam (Islamic Centre), Pusat Pungutan Zakat, Lembaga Tabung Haji , Bank Islam, Sharia’ Courts and others for a better insights and perspective about Islam in Malaysia.

According to Yusnah, the local tourist agencies should also take advantage of the Ramadan, Aidilfitri, and Aidil Adha to bring tourists to observe the Islamic rituals carried out in the mosques as well as in private homes during the holy seasons.

“During Ramadan tourists should be taken to the mosques where they could eat together with the Muslims during the breakfast (iftar) and followed with Maghrib prayers.
“These exposures will give non Muslim tourists a better picture about Islam and for the Muslims they would enjoy performing the Islamic rituals with the Malaysian Muslims here,” she said in an exclusive interview with MagazineN journalist recently

Yusnah also suggested that foreign tourists should be exposed to the “qurban” where cows/goats are slaughtered to be given away to the less fortunate people in the community. This is a good gesture to show that Muslims share and care about the have not segments in the society.

Another interesting Islamic practice where non Muslim and Muslim tourists should observe is the special event held to mark the completion of the Quran reading (Majlis khatam Al-Quran) and the Maulidur Rasul (s.a.w prophet Muhamad’s birthday celebration).

These rituals are important as to believe in Allah (almighty God) holy Al-Quran and to follow s.a.w Prophet Muhamad’s teachings are among the pivotal principles where all Muslims should observe, abide and practice.–Norila Daud, Senior Vice President of AJA
