‘세계 여성의날’ 맞은 요르단, ‘여성영화주간’ 개최

[아시아엔=라드와 아시라프 기자·번역 최정아 기자] ‘세계여성의날’을 맞아 요르단 영화위원회가 ‘여성영화주간’(Women’s Film Week)을 개최한다.

요르단 레인보우 극장에서 오는 8일부터 5일간 다양한 주제를 담은 ‘여성영화’가 상영된다. 특히 과테말라 최초의 여성검사를 다룬 덴마크 영화 <평화의 무게>(Burden of peace)를 시작으로 <드림캐처> <빅 드림> 등 서방부터 아랍까지 다양한 여성영화가 요르단 관객들을 찾아갈 예정이다.

그중에서도 대표적인 화제작은 9일에 상영될 예정인 다큐멘터리영화 <드림캐처>(Dreamcatcher)다. 영국 출신 감독 김 롱젠니토이 메가폰을 잡은 이 작품은 자신의 삶을 변화시키기 위해 끊임없이 투쟁한 매춘부 여성의 이야기를 다루며 여성폭력과 사회 부조리에 대해 날카롭게 지적했다.

컴퓨터 과학 발전에 공헌한 여성들에 대한 영화도 있다. 에나 아가로일과 엘로라 아스라니 공동연출의 <허++>(Her++)는 컴퓨터 과학 전공 여학생들의 꿈과 성공을 이야기 하고 있으며, <빅 드림>(Big Dream)을 연출한 켈리 콕스 감독은 남성의 전유물로 알려진 과학, 수학 등 이과분야에서 자신의 꿈을 성취한 7명의 여성들을 주인공으로 내세웠다.

여성 성폭행·성희롱 문제를 꼬집은 영화도 눈길을 끈다. 모로코 영화 <비하인드 클로즈드 도어즈>(Behind Closed Doors)는 성희롱을 일삼었던 상사에게 소송을 걸어 화제가 됐던 여성의 실화를 영화화 했다. 이밖에 다큐멘터리영화 <하모니>(Harmony)는 자신을 성폭력한 남편을 살해한 죄로 종신형을 받은 여성의 이야기를 다뤘다.

“Women’s Film Week” celebrates women’s day in Jordan

On 8 March, the same day as International Women’s Day, Jordan celebrates women’s achievement and difficulties with “Women’s Film Week,” organized by the royal film commission of Jordan, to be concluded on 12th March.

The show starts on Tuesday 8th March in Rainbow Theater, showing a number of movies on the different aspects of women’s lives, their struggles and success stories, also noting the different social classes, through a number of foreign and Arabic movies. The festival starts with “Burden of Peace” by Dutch director Joey Boink, which tells the story of?Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the prosecutor’s office in Guatemala.

Another documentary set to be shown on March 9th is “Dreamcatcher” by British director Kim Longenito, which deals with the struggles of a former prostitute who makes a change to her life by helping other women to be in control of theirs. The film sheds some light on negligence, violence, and exploitation women suffer from leaving them with no other option but to live as prostitutes.

“Her++” by directors Aena Agaroil and Elora Asrani raises the issue of women involvement and contributions in the field of computer science. As the film takes a look on the decrease of support women get as students of computer science colleges. On the same note, “Big Dream” by Kelly Kocks follows the lives of seven young women trying to achieve their dreams in the fields of science, maths, and technology.

The Morrocan film “Behind Closed Doors” directed by Mohammed Hahad Ben Souda, tells the story of a woman who tries to reach out to women-specialized organizations to sue her manager, who keeps harassing her. It shows the difficulties she faces when she doesn’t have any kind of evidence except her experience.

The documentary “Harmony” directed by Ken Dye Kyo deals with women and family, through the eyes of a woman spending 10 years in jail after killing her harassing husband. Life in prison is shown through her losing her child she gave birth to in prison according to law, and founding a choir with the help of a fellow prisoner who was taken for killing her husband and his mistress.
