리히터 규모 5.7…다카 시민들 “지금까지 겪은 것 중 가장 강하게 흔들렸다”
2025년 11월 21일 오전 10시 38분, 방글라데시에 중강도 지진이 발생해 어린이 2명을 포함한 최소 9명이 숨지고 300명 이상이 부상한 것으로 확인됐다. 방글라데시 기상청은 이번 지진 규모를 리히터 규모 5.7로 발표했으며, 진앙은 다카 인근 나르싱디 지구의 마다브디 지역으로 파악됐다.
미국지질조사국(USGS)은 규모 5.5, 진앙은 나르싱디 시에서 서남서쪽으로 약 14km 떨어진 지점이며 깊이는 10km라고 밝혔다. 지진은 방글라데시 여러 지역에서도 감지됐다. 흔들림은 수초에 불과했지만 주민들은 “강한 충격이 느껴졌다”며 공포에 휩싸였다고 전했다.
사망자는 올드 다카에서 3명, 나르싱디에서 5명, 나랴얀간지 지구에서 1명으로 확인됐다. 가지푸르에서는 건물 밖으로 급히 대피하는 과정에서 공장 노동자 최소 100명이 다쳤다. 특히 다카 올드시티 방살 지역에서는 5층 건물 난간이 무너지며 살리물라 의과대학(Mitford) 학생 라피 울 이슬람을 포함한 3명이 사고로 숨졌다. 주민들은 “난간이 붕괴되자 보행자 3명이 현장에서 즉사했다”고 말했다. 지진으로 여러 건물에서 균열도 발견됐다.
다카 시민들은 이번 지진을 “지금까지 겪은 것 중 가장 강하게 흔들리는 걸 느꼈다”다고 했다. 전문가들은 오래전부터 이 지역의 지진 위험을 경고해 왔으며, 이번 사고가 방글라데시 사회에 ‘중대한 경고’가 되고 있다고 지적했다. 지진 당시 다카 곳곳에서 주민들이 공포 속에 거리로 뛰쳐나왔다. 흔들림은 인도 서벵골 주 콜카타 등 인접 지역에서도 감지된 것으로 알려졌다.
지질학자들은 이번 지진의 발생 지점이 인도-버마 판 경계 지역에 위치한다고 설명했다.
At least nine people killed, hundreds injured as quake hits Bangladesh

Dhaka, 21 November 2025: At least nine people, including two children, were killed and more than three hundred injured when a moderate to strong earthquake struck Bangladesh at 10:38 a.m. on Friday (21 November). According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the quake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre in the Madhabdi area of Narsingdi district near Dhaka.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude as 5.5, with the epicentre located 14 kilometers west-southwest of Narsingdi town at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake was felt in several other parts of the country as well. Although the shaking lasted only a few seconds, panic-stricken residents said they experienced violent jolts during the tremor.
Among the victims, three died in Old Dhaka, five in Narsingdi, and one in Narayanganj district. In Gazipur, at least 100 factory workers were injured while rushing out of buildings during the quake. Three people, including Rafi Ul Islam, a student of Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford), lost their lives when the railing of a five-storey building collapsed in Bangshal, in the old part of Dhaka. Residents said that three pedestrians died instantly when the railing fell. Cracks also appeared in several buildings during the tremor.
Residents of Dhaka city said the strong tremor was the most severe they had ever experienced. Experts have long warned of the possibility of such an earthquake, and they believe this event is a wake-up call for Bangladesh. During the quake, many people in various parts of Dhaka rushed out of their homes in panic. It was also learned that the tremor was felt in neighbouring India, including Kolkata in West Bengal.
Geologists said that the region where the earthquake originated lies within the Indo-Burma tectonic plate.
