[아시아엔=소팔 차이 아시아기자협회 회장, ‘캄보디아뉴스’ 수석고문] 캄보디아 정부가 ‘테초 국제공항(Techo International Airport)이 오는 9월 9일 시범 운영을 시작, 10월 20일 공식 개항한다고 23일 밝혔다. 신공항 개항으로 1955년부터 운영돼온 프놈펜국제공항(포첸퉁공항)은 역사 속으로 사라지게 된다.약 15억 달러 규모의 예산으로 건설되는 신공항은 프놈펜 남쪽 약 30km 떨어진 칸달주와 타케오주 경계에 위치하며, 총 2,600헥타르 부지 위에 건설되고 있다. 설계는 영국 건축회사 포스터 앤 파트너스(Foster + Partners)가 맡아, 캄보디아 전통 건축양식을 현대적으로 재해석한 디자인으로 주목받고 있다. 중앙 헤드하우스와 날개 모양 피어, 자연광을 활용한 구조, 대형 불상과 전통 목조건축물이 결합된 내부 공간은 캄보디아 문화 정체성을 담아내고 있다.
4F 등급 국제공항으로 설계된 테초 공항은 에어버스 A380과 보잉 747 등 대형 항공기의 이착륙이 가능하며, 현 1단계에서 연간 1,300만 명의 여객 수용이 가능하다. 테초공항은 이후 단계별 확장을 통해 2030년까지 3,000만 명, 2050년까지는 5,000만 명까지 수용인원을 확대할 계획이다.
이번 사업은 국가비행사무국(SSCA)과 해외캄보디아투자공사(OCIC, Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation)가 각각 10%와 90% 지분으로 참여한 민관합작 투자(PPP) 방식으로 추진되며, 전체 공정은 △1단계(2020~2030), △2단계(2030~2050), △3단계(2050년 이후)로 구성된다. 기존 366.72헥타르 규모의 프놈펜 국제공항은 완전히 폐쇄된다. 이에 대해 훈 마넷 총리는 “프놈펜 공항 부지는 국민을 위한 공공 목적에 최대한 활용하겠다”고 밝혔다.
테초 국제공항은 향후 캄보디아의 관광 및 물류 산업은 물론, 인도차이나 반도 허브로서의 입지 강화에도 핵심 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.

Cambodia’s Techo International Airport to Open in September, Replacing Phnom Penh Airport After 60 Years
Phnom Penh — The Cambodian government announced on the 23rd that Techo International Airport will begin trial operations on September 9, with an official opening scheduled for October 20. The opening of the new airport will mark the end of operations for Phnom Penh International Airport (Pochentong Airport), which has been in service since 1955.
The new airport, built with an estimated investment of USD 1.5 billion, is located about 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, straddling the border of Kandal and Takeo provinces. Designed by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners, the airport features a modern reinterpretation of traditional Cambodian architectural styles. The terminal includes a central headhouse, wing-shaped piers, and a structure that maximizes natural light, with interiors featuring large Buddha statues, wooden Khmer-style structures, and over 200 stone sculptures, all reflecting Cambodia’s rich cultural identity.
Designated as a Class 4F international airport by ICAO standards, Techo International Airport is capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. During its first phase, it will be able to handle up to 13 million passengers annually. The capacity is expected to increase to 30 million by 2030 and 50 million by 2050 through phased expansion.
The project is being developed as a public-private partnership (PPP), with 10% stake held by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) and 90% by the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC). The development is divided into three phases:
Phase 1: 2020–2030
Phase 2: 2030–2050
Phase 3: 2050 onward
The existing 366.72-hectare Phnom Penh International Airport will be permanently closed. Prime Minister Hun Manet stated, “The site will be repurposed for public use to the greatest extent possible.”
Techo International Airport is expected to play a vital role not only in boosting Cambodia’s tourism and logistics industries, but also in solidifying its position as a strategic hub on the Indochina Peninsula.
