[2020 평창영화제] 폭력의 나비효과 ‘아부 레일라’
“다시 평화!” 2020년 6월 중순, 강원도 평창에선 2020평창국제평화영화제가 열렸습니다. 코로나19로 극도의 긴장과 우려 속에 엿새간 치러졌습니다. 전 세계 주요 영화제가 취소 또는 연기되는 가운데 코로나 사태 이후 처음으로 열린 평창영화제는 안팎으로 ‘성공적’이었다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. <아시아엔>은 이번에 선을 보인 34개국 96편의 영화 가운데 선별해 독자들께 소개합니다. <편집자>
1994년 알제리. 북부에서 수년간 내전이 치러지고, 일상에 죽음과 공포의 기운이 끝없이 흐른다. 형제와 다름없는 친구 사이인 경찰관 S와 로트피는 극악한 테러리스트 아부 레일라를 찾아 사막으로 떠나고, 사막 깊은 곳으로 들어갈수록 그들은 내면의 트라우마를 마주하게 된다. <아부 레일라>는 마치 환상소설을 읽는 듯 현실과 판타지, 백일몽의 경계가 무화되는 기이한 세계를 펼쳐보인다. 트라우마로 자리잡은 사건이 불러일으킨 나비효과는 영화의 처음과 끝을 열고 닫으며, 폭력의 깊은 어둠이 한 남자를 집어삼키는 과정을 절절히 묘사하고 있다.
Abou Leila
In 1994, a civil war has been raging for years in the northern part of Algeria. Lotfi and police officer S, two childhood friends, head into the Sahara in search of a terrorist named Abou Leila. The further the duo travel, the better they see their internal trauma. Abou Leila presents an eerie world where boundaries between reality, fantasy, and hallucination break down just like in a fantasy novel. The butterfly effect that has been triggered by the incident in their trauma opens and closes the film, depicting the process of violence engulfing a man.
아민 시디-부메디엔느
2005년 프랑스 사립 영화원(CLCF)를 졸업했다. 두 번재 단편 영화인<섬>은 아부다비 국제 영화제에서 아랍영화 부문 최우수단편상을 수상했다.
Amin SIDI-BOUMEDIENE
Graduated from Conservatoire Libre du Cinema Francais (CLCF) in 2005. His second shot film The Island won the award for Best Short Film at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.
