BNP가 압도적 다수 의석을 확보하면서 향후 정부 구성과 의회 운영의 주도권을 쥘 것으로 전망된다. 국제사회 반응도 잇따랐다. 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리는 총선 직후 타리크 라만에게 전화로 축하 인사를 전했으며, 소셜미디어 X를 통해 통화 사실과 축하 메시지를 공개했다. 파키스탄, 말레이시아 등도 BNP 승리에 축하 메시지를 전한 것으로 전해졌다.
이번 선거는 2024년 시위 이후 출범한 유누스 과도정부가 전환기를 관리하는 가운데 치러졌다. 유누스는 과도정부 수반으로서 선거 관리 체제를 운영해 왔으나, 선거 이후 어떤 공식 직책을 맡을지에 대해서는 현 시점에서 확인된 발표가 없다.
이번 총선은 셰이크 하시나 전 총리가 2024년 시위 이후 퇴진한 뒤 처음 열린 전국 단위 선거였다. 하시나는 이후 인도로 이동해 귀국하지 않은 상태로 보도됐다. 일부 외신은 하시나가 이번 선거 결과에 대해 “불법적·위헌적”이라고 비판하는 입장을 밝혔다고 전했다.
BNP가 압도적 의석을 바탕으로 새 정부 구성을 추진하는 가운데, 방글라데시의 정치 전환이 향후 어떤 방향으로 이어질지, 과도정부 체제의 종료와 신정부 출범 과정이 어떻게 진행될지 주목된다.
타리크 라흐만(60)은 지아우르 라흐만 전 대통령과 칼레다 지아 전 총리의 장남으로, BNP를 이끄는 핵심 인물이다. 다카대에서 수학한 뒤 정계에 투신했으며, 2008년부터 런던에서 체류하며 당을 원격으로 지휘해 왔다. 과거 부패·범죄 혐의로 유죄 판결을 받았으나 정치적 탄압이라는 반론도 있다. BNP의 총선 승리로 차기 총리 유력 후보로 거론된다.
BNP’s Landslide Victory: 212 Seats Secured, Tarique Rahman Seen as Likely Next Prime Minister

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) scored a landslide victory in the country’s 13th national parliamentary election held on February 12, winning 212 seats out of 299 in an alliance. The election was conducted under the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, which was formed after the mass anti-government protests in 2024. The Election Commission (EC) said voter turnout stood at 59.44 percent. With BNP’s sweeping win, political observers believe BNP leader Tarique Rahman is now widely seen as the likely next prime minister.
BNP secured a clear single majority with its 212-seat tally. Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as a major rival force, winning 77 seats. The EC said results for 297 out of the 299 constituencies have already been announced, and confirmed that voter turnout in the election was 59.44 percent.
With BNP now holding an overwhelming majority, the party is expected to take the lead in forming the next government and steering parliamentary affairs. International reactions followed quickly. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman by telephone soon after the election and later shared the message publicly on microblogging platform X. Pakistan and Malaysia were also reported to have extended their congratulations to Rahman and BNP.
The election was held under the transitional administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, who has overseen the country’s interim governance since the political upheaval of 2024. However, as of now, there has been no confirmed announcement regarding whether Yunus will hold any official position after the election.
The election was the first nationwide vote since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down following the 2024 protests. Hasina has reportedly remained in India since then and has not returned to Bangladesh. Some foreign media reported that she criticized the election outcome as “illegal” and “unconstitutional.”
As BNP moves to form the next government based on its decisive mandate, attention is now focused on how Bangladesh’s political transition will proceed, including the end of the interim government and the formal inauguration of a new administration.
Tarique Rahman (60) is the eldest son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and a key leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). After studying at the University of Dhaka, he entered politics and has lived in London since 2008 while directing the party from abroad. He was previously convicted in corruption and criminal cases, though BNP has described them as politically motivated. Following BNP’s election victory, he is widely seen as a leading contender for prime minister.
