아부다비 알 아인에서 1월 5~8일 열려…올해 3회째
사막캠프에서 전통과 윤리 체험…미래 세대에 문화유산 전승
에미리트-일본 매사냥 교류 행사 제3회가 아부다비 알 아인에서 1월 5일부터 8일까지 열린다. 이번 행사는 Emirates Falconers Club이 주최한다. 이 교류 행사는 일본의 INPIX-JODCO와의 협약에 따라 진행되며, 아랍에미리트와 일본 양국 매사냥인들 간의 우호 증진과 학생 교류, 문화 협력 강화를 주요 목표로 한다.
올해 행사의 주제는 ‘매를 통해 유산의 다리를 놓다(Building Bridges of Heritage Through Falcons)’로, 매사냥이 국가 간 문화적 대화와 상호 이해를 잇는 중요한 문화적 매개체임을 강조하고 있다. 2026년 행사는 특히 전통성과 현장성을 강화한 것이 특징이다. 사막 환경 속에 베두인식 매사냥 캠프를 조성해 전통 매사냥인의 생활방식을 재현했으며, 2024년 처음 열린 행사에 비해 참가 규모도 크게 확대됐다.
마지드 알리 알 만수리 에미리트 매사냥 클럽 사무총장은 “지도부의 지속적인 지원은 매사냥을 인류 공동의 문화유산으로 인식하고, 이를 통해 상호 존중과 지속가능성의 가치를 바탕으로 소통의 다리를 놓을 수 있다는 확고한 믿음을 반영한 것”이라고 말했다.
그는 “매사냥은 국경을 초월하는 보편적 언어로, 자연에 대한 존중과 세대 간 지식 전승이라는 본질적 가치를 담고 있다”며 “이번 교류 행사를 통해 일본과의 의미 있는 문화적 파트너십을 이어가며 인류 공동의 유산을 보존하는 데 기여하게 돼 뜻깊다”고 덧붙였다.
알 만수리 사무총장은 또 이번 교류 행사가 이론과 실습을 결합한 종합 교육 과정으로 구성돼 참가자들이 에미리트 매사냥의 문화적·환경적 의미를 보다 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 설계됐다고 설명했다. 그는 지속가능성의 최고 기준에 부합하는 방식으로 이 유산을 지켜갈 책임 있는 차세대 매사냥인을 양성하겠다는 클럽의 의지도 재확인했다.
이번 제3회 교류 행사는 앞선 두 차례의 성과를 토대로 기획됐다. 제1회는 2024년 1월 알 아인에서 열렸고, 제2회는 2025년 2월 일본 이치하라에서 개최됐다. 첫 행사에는 양국에서 28명이 참가해 전문 강의와 워크숍, 사냥 체험 등을 포함한 집중 일정 속에서 매사냥에 대한 지식을 공유하고 공동의 이해를 넓혔다.
2026년 교류 행사는 Al Ain의 레마(Remah) 지역, 텔랄 알 아인 리조트 인근 사막 캠프에서 진행된다. 참가자는 에미리트와 일본의 매사냥인들을 비롯해 모하메드 빈 자이드 매사냥·사막연구학교 학생들, 일본 매사냥 전공 학생들, 셰이크 자이드 남자 사립학교 학생들, 그리고 매사냥과 맹금류 보존 분야의 전문가들로 구성된다.
행사는 이론과 실습을 아우르는 다채로운 일정으로 운영된다. 아라비아 전통 매사냥에 사용되는 매의 종류 소개, 유인 미끼를 활용한 실습 훈련, 지속가능한 매사냥 윤리에 따른 사냥 체험이 포함된다. 사냥 체험에서는 매와 살루키 견을 활용해 후바라 바스타드와 사막 토끼를 사냥하며, 추적과 사막 연구 관련 활동도 함께 진행된다.
이와 함께 매사냥 도구 제작 등 전통 수공예 워크숍과 마즐리스에서 열리는 문화 세션도 마련된다. 이 자리에서는 에미리트의 관습과 아랍 커피 문화, 사냥 이야기, 전통 요리 방식 등이 소개될 예정이다.
또한 매의 건강 관리와 환경 인식 제고를 위해 수의학적 관리와 건강 검진에 대한 기초 교육, 매 클리닉 방문 프로그램도 운영된다.이번 교류 행사는 매사냥의 윤리를 강화하고, 환경적 지속가능성과 야생동물 존중의 가치를 확산하는 한편, 이 고대 전통의 진정한 의미를 미래 세대에 전승하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.
Emirati–Japanese Falconry Exchange Event Bridges Tradition Across the Desert

The third edition of the Emirati–Japanese Falconry Exchange Event, organized by the Emirates Falconers Club, will be held from January 5 to 8 in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi.
Conducted under an agreement with the Japanese organization INPIX-JODCO, the event seeks to strengthen friendship initiatives, promote student exchanges, and enhance cultural cooperation between falconers in the United Arab Emirates and Japan.
This year’s edition is held under the theme “Building Bridges of Heritage Through Falcons,” highlighting falconry’s role as a powerful medium for cultural dialogue and mutual understanding between nations.
The 2026 edition stands out for its authentic setting. A Bedouin-style falconry camp has been established in a desert environment to reflect the traditional lifestyle of falconers. Participation has also expanded significantly compared with the inaugural edition held in 2024.
Majid Ali Al Mansouri, Secretary General of the Emirates Falconers Club, said the leadership’s continued support for the event reflects a firm belief in falconry as a shared human and cultural heritage, as well as in its capacity to build bridges of communication grounded in mutual respect and sustainability.
“Falconry is a universal language that transcends borders,” Al Mansouri said. “It embodies values rooted in respect for nature and the transmission of knowledge across generations. Through this exchange event, we are pleased to continue building meaningful cultural partnerships with Japan that contribute to preserving our shared human heritage.”
He added that the 2026 edition offers a comprehensive educational experience combining theoretical instruction with practical application, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of Emirati falconry and its cultural and environmental dimensions. He also reaffirmed the club’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of responsible falconers capable of safeguarding this heritage in line with the highest standards of sustainability.
The third edition builds on the success of the previous two. The first was held in Al Ain in January 2024, followed by the second edition in Ichihara, Japan, in February 2025. The inaugural event brought together 28 participants from both countries and featured an intensive program of specialized lectures, workshops, and hunting trips designed to facilitate knowledge transfer and foster a shared appreciation of the art of falconry.
The 2026 exchange event will take place in the Remah area of Al Ain, at a desert camp near Telal Al Ain Resort. Participants include Emirati and Japanese falconers, students from the Mohammed bin Zayed School of Falconry and Desert Studies, Japanese falconry students, students from Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Boys, as well as experts and specialists in falconry and the conservation of birds of prey.
The event features a diverse program of theoretical and practical activities, including introductions to falcon species used in traditional Arabian falconry, hands-on training with lures, and hunting trips conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of sustainable falconry. These trips involve hunting houbara bustards and desert hares using falcons and Saluki dogs, alongside activities focused on tracking and desert studies.
In addition, workshops on traditional falconry-related handicrafts are included, covering the design and crafting of tools. Cultural sessions held in the majlis will introduce participants to Emirati customs, Arabic coffee traditions, hunting narratives, and traditional cooking practices.
Special emphasis is also placed on health and environmental awareness through introductory sessions on veterinary care, health examinations for falcons, and educational visits to the falcon clinic.
Together, these activities reinforce the ethics of falconry, promote environmental sustainability, encourage respect for wildlife, and ensure that the authentic values of this ancient practice are passed on to future generations.
