파키스탄 남부 신드(Sindh)주의 주도 카라치(Karachi)에서 2일 밤 216명의 수감자들이 교도소를 탈옥하는 사건이 발생했다. 탈옥 수감자들 가운데는 마약사범과 아프간 난민도 다수 포함된 것으로 알려졌다.
현지 보도에 따르면, 사건은 카라치 일대에 연이어 발생한 지진 진동으로 혼란이 빚어지는 가운데 벌어졌다. 당시 교도소에는 수감자 600여 명이 있었으며 이들 가운데 일부가 지진으로 땅과 건물이 흔들리는 틈을 타 교도관들을 제압하는 등 충돌 끝에 탈주했다.
교도소 안팎에서는 격렬한 총격전이 벌어졌으며, 군과 경찰은 주변 지역을 봉쇄하고 국도(National Highway) 등 일부 주요 도로를 일시 폐쇄했다.
교도소 측은 사태 수습을 위해 발포했고, 이 과정에서 보안 인력 5명이 부상당했다. 부상자 가운데는 준군사조직 프론티어 코어(FC) 요원 2명도 포함됐다. 수감자 중 1명이 사망하고 3명이 부상을 입은 것으로 전해졌다.
현지 경찰은 3일 오전까지 수색작전을 벌여 탈옥한 수감자 중 80여명을 체포했다. 다만 아직도 상당수가 도주 중이며, 당국은 총력 추적에 나서고 있다.
당국은 216명이 혼란을 틈타 탈출했고 현재까지 80명 이상이 재검거되었으며, 135명 이상이 여전히 도주 중이라고 전했다.
당국은 이번 탈옥과 지진의 직접적인 연관성을 공식적으로 확인하지 않았지만, 동일한 시점에 발생한 점에서 개연성이 높은 것으로 보고 있다. 이날 카라치에서는 규모는 작지만 복수의 지진이 잇따라 관측된 바 있다.
Around 216 prisoners, including drug addicts and Afghan refugees, escaped from a jail in Karachi, the capital city of southern Sindh province of Pakistan, in a dramatic incident on Monday night.
The escape occurred amid chaos reportedly triggered by a series of tremors in the city. The prisoners, many of whom were already outside their barracks, took advantage of the confusion and overwhelmed jail staff, leading to a violent standoff.
Heavy firing was reported both inside and around the jail premises. Several routes, including the National Highway, were temporarily closed as police and Rangers cordoned off the area.
According to reports, more than 600 prisoners were seated outside their barracks due to internal jail procedures when the tremors occurred. Prison authorities opened fire in an attempt to regain control. During the confrontation, at least five security personnel, including two Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, sustained injuries. One prisoner was killed and three others were injured. On Tuesday morning, more than 80 of the escaped inmates had been rearrested during search operations.
Authorities stated that 216 inmates took advantage of the chaos to escape, more than 80 have since been recaptured, and over 135 remain at large.
While the authorities have not confirmed a direct link between the tremors and the jail break, the timing has raised eyebrows. Karachi experienced multiple mild earthquakes the same day.
