베트남 여행객, 국내선 항공료 급등에 해외로 발길 돌린다

[아시아엔=란 퐁 베트남 ‘단 트리’ 국제뉴스 부장] 베트남 하노이시에 거주하는 응우옌 티 마이는 두 자녀와 함께 여행 갈 계획을 세우고 있었다. 그녀는 기차나 버스 등 육로로 갈 수 있는 여행지를 찾고 있었다. 올해 들어 항공료가 급증했기 때문이다. “3일의 휴가 동안 당초 계획했던 다낭, 호이안 대신 비교적 근거리의 사파나 하롱베이를 갈까 한다.”

호치민 시에 거주하는 트린 민 하 가족의 행선지는 태국이었다. 그는 “다낭에 가려고 했지만 항공권 가격이 비싸서 변경했다”며 “베트남항공의 호치민-다낭 왕복 항공권 가격이 1인당 약 500만동(약 28만원)인데 비해 태국행 왕복 항공권은 1인당 약 310만동(약 17만원)이면 구매할 수 있다”고 설명했다.

올해 들어 베트남 국내 노선의 이코노미석 좌석 평균 가격이 2023년 대비 최대 25%까지 급등했다. 이로 인해 많은 베트남 국민들이 가까운 육로여행이나 해외여행으로 행선지를 돌리고 있다. 실제로 일부 여행사에 따르면 해외여행객이 급증하기도 했다.

베트남 현지 여행사 하노투어 측은 “올해 상반기 출시한 중국 여행 상품이 거의 다 팔렸다”고 밝혔다. 비엣럭스투어는 “항공권 가격이 패키지여행 가격의 절반 이상을 차지하는 경우가 많다”며 “베트남 국내 항공료가 올라감에 따라 많은 사람들이 해외로 빠져나가고 있다”고 설명했다. 또한 “그 중에서도 태국은 항공권 할인 프로모션과 적극적인 관광홍보 등으로 인기가 많다”고 덧붙였다.

베트남 국내선 항공료의 급등은 공급 측면에서 기인한다. 올해 1월 베트남 국영항공사인 베트남항공과 저비용 항공사인 비엣젯항공은 엔진의 기술결함으로 인해 에어버스 A321 항공기의 운항을 줄여야 했다. 특히 베트남항공은 엔진 유지보수를 위해 항공기 12대의 운항을 중단했는데, 이는 2025년까지 전체 운항편에 영향을 미칠 전망이다. 민간항공사인 뱀부항공은 구조조정 등의 내부 문제로 항공기 운항 편수를 작년 30대에서 올해 상반기 5대까지 대폭 줄였다.

베트남 당국에 따르면 2024년 상반기 기준 베트남의 항공사에서 운행 중인 항공기는 총 160대로, 코로나19 펜데믹 이전과 비교하면 약 60대 이상 감소했다. 이에 대해 베트남의 저명 경자학자 딘 쫑 틴 교수는 “더 많은 항공사를 설립하고 항공기 수도 늘려 가격 인상을 억제해야 하지만 항공사 설립 절차가 복잡하기 때문에 오랜 시일이 걸릴 것”이라고 지적했다.

이에 베트남 항공사들은 지난 여름 휴가철 여행객을 끌어들이기 위해 주간 항공편보다 20~40% 저렴한 가격에 늦은 밤이나 이른 아침에 출발하는 항공편을 늘렸다. 그러나 이는 소비자들의 구미를 당기지 못했다.

베트남항공의 레 홍 하 대표는 “야간 항공편을 이용하는 승객들은 호텔의 체크인 정책에 따라 불필요한 추가 숙박을 해야 하는 경우가 많고, 또 늦은 밤에 이용할 마땅한 교통수단도 없다”고 설명했다. 그는 “야간 항공편은 사람들이 고향으로 향하는 음력 설 연휴 등에 더 적합해 보인다”며 “야간 항공편이 활성화되기 위해선 이해당사자들의 유연한 정책이 뒷받침돼야 한다”고 강조했다.

항공기 확보에 어려움을 겪고 있음에도 오히려 운항빈도를 늘리거나 신규노선을 개설하려는 항공사들도 있었다. 지난 6월말 뱀부항공은 로얄에어필리핀과 항공기 임대계약을 체결했는데, 이는 나트랑, 다낭, 꾸이년 등 베트남의 유명관광지 노선을 증편하기 위한 선택이었다. 르엉 호아이 남 뱀부항공 대표는 “베트남 항공사들이 더 많은 항공기를 확보하지 않는 한 항공료가 인하되기는 어렵다”고 강조하며 “연말까지 항공기를 더 임대해 국내 노선을 추가 확보할 계획”이라고 말했다.

Vietnamese people turning to overseas trips as local airlines charge high

Nguyen Thi Mai from Hanoi is booking a tour for her family as her two children are on summer holiday. She was looking for destinations that can be reached by trains or buses.

“Airfares are very costly this year so we’ve decided to choose places of shorter distances so that we can go by buses or trains,” Mai explained. “We have three days for the holiday and I’m considering Sapa or Ha Long Bay instead of going to Hue, Danang, or Hoi An as we earlier planned.”

Trinh Minh Ha from Ho Chi Minh City has also booked a four-day-three-night tour to Thailand for his family’s summer holiday.

“We planned to go to Danang but then we changed due to the high air ticket prices,” Ha shared. “A return ticket for Vietnam Airlines’ HCM City-Danang flights is roughly VND5 million per person, while we only have to pay around VND3.1 million for a return air ticket to Thailand.”

The average price for economy class tickets on Vietnam’s domestic routes has surged by up to 25 percent compared to 2023. And this has resulted in more people turning to road tours or overseas trips.

According to some local travel firms, the number of people booking overseas trips has surged.

Ho Xuan Phuc, general director of Hanotour, said that most of his firm’s tours to China had been fully booked by late June.

According to Nguyen Ngoc An, deputy director of Vietluxtour Joint Stock Company, air tickets often account for between 50-60 percent of a package tour. Amid more expensive domestic tours, more Vietnamese people have tended to select travel abroad.

“Thailand is offering lots of tourism promotion activities with attractive air ticket discounts, and many of our customers have decided to take these options.”

Vietnamese airlines struggling with plane shortages
Since January, the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and low-cost carrier VietJet Air have had to reduce their flights using Airbus A321 aircraft due to technical issues with Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100 engines. Vietnam Airlines was forced to ground 12 of its planes, accounting for 20 percent of its narrow-body aircraft, for engine maintenance, which is set to last until 2025.

Bamboo Airways had only five aircraft during the first half of this year, down from 30 last year due to internal difficulties and restructuring.

Similarly, Pacific Airlines’ fleet has also been downsized.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, local airlines currently have only 160 operational aircraft, a drop of 60-70 planes compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the problem with the Congthuong.vn Online Newspaper, economist Dinh Trong Thinh from the Academy of Finance said that Vietnam should seek measures to establish more airlines and increase the number of aircraft fleet so as to curb the ticket price hike.

“However, I think this would take time as it requires complicated procedures to form new carriers in Vietnam,” he said.

More night flights with cheaper tickets
To meet the increasing demand in the summer, more airlines in Vietnam have increased night and early morning flights with ticket prices of between 20-40 percent lower than daytime flights.

However, those night flights have still failed to lure passengers.

Explaining the situation, Vietnam Airlines CEO Le Hong Ha said that passengers taking night flights may have to incur an extra night of accommodation because hotel check-in policies are not flexible. Transportation options for nighttime travel are inconvenient.

“Night flights are more suitable for peak periods such as the Lunar New Year Holiday as people flock to return to their hometown,” Ha said, adding that hotels should apply more flexible policies to facilitate night flights.

Leasing more aircraft to increase frequencies and launch new routes
Despite facing a serious aircraft shortage, some Vietnamese airlines are still trying to increase frequencies or open more routes to serve the peak summer holiday season.

On June 25, Bamboo Airways received another Airbus A320 from Royal Air Philippines under a wet lease contract. The aircraft will increase flights to popular tourist destinations like Nha Trang, Da Nang, and Quy Nhon during the summer holiday.

This is the third wet-lease aircraft Bamboo Airways has received this year. Two others were used during the 2024 Tet Lunar New Year Holiday travel season.

Addressing a recent workshop, Bamboo Airways CEO Luong Hoai Nam emphasised that domestic airfares can only fall if local airlines own more aircraft.

Nam shared that Bamboo Airways plans to lease one more aircraft by the end of the year to open additional domestic routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Dalat, Thanh Hoa and Phu Quoc.

Vietnam Airlines is also receiving three more Airbus A320neo aircraft this year, with the first arriving in early July.

Vietnam Airlines also expanded its international flight network by opening a new route connecting Hanoi with Chengdu, China on June 25. This route will have four weekly flights on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
