Welcome to the End of The Show

In his original preface to “Animal Farm,” George Orwell wrote that the greatest threat to the freedom of speech and thought was not official, government censorship but “fear of public opinion.” He writes that ”at any given moment there is an orthodoxy, a body of ideas which it is assumed that all right-thinking people will accept without question.” As the world’s greatest reality show is about to end, I suspect that we are witnessing the demise?and the dying struggles?of orthodoxy.

As I have written previously, the next American president will not be the clown in a suit, not because of his lack of policy, attention span, and decency, but only because women find him and men like him disgusting. Hamid Dabashi, a professor at Columbia University, wrote an op-ed for al Jazeera where he compared Barack Obama and Donald Trump to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The good Dr. Jekyll cannot exist without the brutish Mr. Hyde, and try as Jekyll might, he cannot stop Hyde from visiting again and again.

Clinton spent this last debate putting out fires from Wikileaks and Veritas Action, which portray her and her campaign as ruthless, unethical, and power hungry. Donna Brazile, the chairperson of the DNC, claimed that the leaks are untrustworthy, unethical results of a Russian cybercrime and attempt to sway the election. Brazile pointed to the investigations by the Department of Homeland Security as evidence of Russian involvement. Jordan Chariton of “The Young Turks” asked “they also told us [Iraq] has WMDs, why should we trust this?’

Orthodox thought in American politics, regardless of which side of the race you cheer, is that America is good, exceptional, a shining beacon of democracy, diversity, and freedom. The president is the most powerful person in the world, the leader of the free world, and cares about the American people. Despite its failings, American democracy is the best system known to mankind and the system works for the benefit of its people. Both candidates sell themselves based on this orthodoxy: Donald Trump wants to “make America great again,” and Hillary Clinton thinks “America is great, because America is good.”

As this quadrennial reality show draws to a close, technology which forces us to take a closer look behind the scenes lays bare the spectacle of politics. For years, whistleblowers such as Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning have showed us that Americans are not free and that America is not good. The internet has given voice to arguments that American politics is controlled by international finance and the military-industrial complex. Cross-cultural and international media have laid bare the lie that the world awaits liberation through American democracy. In this special election, we are shown the bankruptcy and corruption of both parties.

Syria continues to burn in a great power struggle between Russia and the US, complicated by regional power dynamics that the American public do not, and care not to, understand. The Philippines turns away from American hegemony because of what they see as a giant hypocrisy. The Black Lives Matter movement struggles with the dissonance between American orthodoxy and prevailing reality. Social democrats such as Bernie Sanders struggle with the discrepancy between what Clinton has stood for so far, and what she promises to stand for. The orthodoxy is dying from a million paper cuts, or more literally, a million shared memes.

Welcome to the end of the show. Dr. Jekyll transformed into Mr. Hyde in order to (occasionally) indulge in violent, evil, and lustful activities without the negative consequences of detection and condemnation. The government of the United States and its leaders have engaged in violent, evil, and rapacious conquests of the natural world, the poor, and the powerless. As Dr. Jekyll finds out, hiding from yourself is not a long-term solution; Mr. Hyde eventually takes over Dr. Jekyll. In this election, the support of women and minority voters will protect American democracy from a violent takeover by a self-indulgent, noxious ego. Unless America can reflect its own narrative about itself however, Mr. Trump will only be the first of many such unwelcome challenges
